Is there a bushing which goes between the steering wheel and column? Received a plastic bushing with the rebuild kit, but the steering wheel doesn't engage the splines fully or allow for good nut engagement. This is a '91 with 5 port. Looks like there is already a bushing at the top of the column, maybe recessed 1/4" from end of tube.

Yes-there is a bushing around 1/4 inch down. I put two screws into the bushing-pulled out and put new on. Didn't really tighten things up as the new has some play in it as well. Old wasn't very loose but there was a little bit of play I thought I could get rid of.

I didn't have anything at home to measure the od of the steering shaft, but I suspect it is tapered beneath the spline, to produce a good tight fit and limit how far the steering wheel can move down during tightening. Looks like the id of steering wheel hub is centered around the outside of the steering column tube. I'll get this on tonight.
