I tried to resurrect this old thread

http://www.wfmachines.com/discus/messages/335/112722.html

to add to it, but I could not so I will continue here.

I did all that was done there including a $85.00 new fuel pump with no luck. As major frustration set in I took the carb off and it the JDService for a $65.00 cleaning and new parts and low and behold it runs better has it ever has.

I thought if anyone was banging their head against the wall like I was....

I'm looking to buy a 425 that is in decent shape. Problem is the PTO won't engage. I know the owner fairly well and he is letting me diagnose the problem before I buy it off him. I wanted to know if there is a way to use a "jumper wire" for now " testing purposes " to see if I get it to engage. This is a nice machine and has the rear PTO kit on it installed. Any inputs ???

Can you hear the solenoid click when you pull the switch ?
Look under frame for the set of wires that connect the original wire harness to the rear pto solenoids as they might be broken or corroded .
Check for current at each solenoid with key on and switch up.
Could be the switch also
Basically start from power to the point you have none

First I would check and make sure all the safety switches are working and ok. You can jumper the wires on the back of the pto switch, but I can't remember which ones they are. Most likely it is the ignition switch, they were a common problem with these tractors. I am actually replacing mine since it stopped working. On the right side of the tractor, if you remove the side panel there is a circuit board that is attached to the key switch, there are two LEDs that should be lit when the tractor is running with the brake off. I believe the Green one will tell you you have power to the fuel pump, and the red one will tell you there is power to the pto. If you can take a look at that, then you will know pretty quickly. I just ordered mine off of ebay, it was cheaper than the dealers.

Good luck, I love mine so far.

If you add 12 volts to the solenoid , then it should turn on the pto , if it is working properly hydraulic-wise and the solenoid coil is good. I've seen where the spool in the solenoid was installed wrong at the time rear pto was added , that caused a non-functioning pto . Was the rear pto just installed recently , or has it been on there before the PTO problems showed up ?

I've also seen brake switch problem knock it out of function , as well as a bent Reverse In Operation (RIO) trip lever or missing spring on RIO trip lever take away the PTO functionality on 99' and above units . One of the reasons I specifically asked the year of your unit .

There are a whole hoop of switches involved when a rear pto system is added , that are not involved on the as delivered tractors ; henceforth , more logic must be satisfied for them to work as designed .

David,

Thanks for the info. It'll be till this weekend till I can get to it again. But at least now I know what to look for. I think it was installed before and was used for mowing and other things. So the pto was working previously.
