thinking of buying a 420 near me listed on the evil craigslist. I sold my 140 to get something bigger with 2 speed and differential lock. I really wanted a 430 or a 332 but I cant seem to find one near me. so I found this 420 that is a bit to high priced for me as it has just a rear pto mcs and deck. am I nuts to buy it running on one cylinder if I can get the price low enough with a repower in mind? it has had 2 sets of rings and 3 head gaskets in one summer.so to me it needs a new engine. ( im not a big fan of onans I avoid them like the plague.) the paint is great though with about 11-1200 hours.

Dustin,

The Onan engines will last for many years and hours if they are properly rebuilt. Don't just replace what is defective, give it a complete overhaul. It should still cost much less than a repower option, and it will be worth more if/when you decide to resell it.

I wouldnt pay much if running on one cylinder. If you buy a repower kit, your going to have to stick 1500-2000 into it, rebuild is probably at least $5-700 depending on how far gone it is.

I would love to get a 420 cheap because it was running on one cylinder, Onans aren't alien engineering and can be repaired relatively easily, without much expense if I was doing it myself. I acquired my 318 solely for the reason that it had an Onan in it and it didn't run when I got it. Having used gas drive welding machines for many years, they were considered the amongst toughest and best engines for a gas drive,

Saw that one. That's a lot of cash I would look for a different one. Don't be afraid of an Onan, I personally like them and I agree with Bob that they will last a long time (like anything else) if they are properly cared for.

I just dropped 900 bucks on a worn out 420 in the md area.that's the cheapest I found close to me so I jumped on it, fortunately it is not my primary machine yet...... It needs a lot of work, but to me that's part of the hobby, my advise is if you are gonna repower anyway offer him what you are comfortable with the worst they can do is say no.
