Regan,

I am pretty sure that your ground speed lever did not entirely leave the notch -- so it may be that the neutral switch travel has become a bit worn over the decades and the switch needs to have its position adjusted a bit. As the tractor idled, the switch may have just experienced enough flex in the lever pressing on it that it opened momentarily. The TM1590 shows how to do this for the 420 ... it should be the same on your 430 I believe.

The spring that holds the hydro lever could be broke. Is the lever very easy to move side to side when in neutral or does it feel like it's being held in the neutral position?

If it moves side to side in neutral really easy - most likely broken spring

If not, most likely need to adjust neutral switch on dash.
