Only think I can think of will be the linkage for the tranny and I don't know which year added the brake safety switch. Also around mid 88 they started to powdercoat the tractors instead of normal paint-sometimes it flakes off in large areas at once.

Drew,

There are a multitude of minor differences between the 'early' and 'later' engines as denoted in the CTM3 engine manual. If you have a PDF version of the manual you can search on "later" and find most text and illustration references to those differences...

For the most part, the later 430 engine has similar governor, injection pump and accessories configuration to the 3TN66 series as used in the 332 tractors. I did not find a model year reference, but 'early' engines have SN less than 5000 and the later engines have SN of 5001 and up. Very likely the 89 year model of the 430 already had the later engine...

I found a 92 430 with 1200 hrs on it. was thinking about getting it to replace my 89 430. I was wondering if I decide to strip my 89 will all the parts be interchangeable. He's asking $1900 for it. Is that a decent price with a 50" deck? the grill, fender pan and hood are in good shape. the deck looks like its been used a lot. I have a 60" deck from my 89 that I was planning to put on it.

Steve,

Everything should fit except perhaps the hydro linkage on the ground speed lever (up to 4 different revisions were used over the years...)

If your '89 Yanmar serial number is over 5001 it should be the same as the engine in the newer tractor in all regards... Here is a page from the CTM3 on how to decode the number plate -- the last 6 digits are the serial number.
engine serial number tag parsing from CTM3.pdf (28 k)

If you have room/resources, you might consider keeping both tractors and getting each running well -- then you can have one for turf/mowing chores and the other for ground engaging attachments and snow duties. Just a thought...

I picked up the 92 430 on Saturday . I'll post pics as soon as I figure out the resizer. They dropped the price by $100 and gave me a new battery to put in it. The only bad thing is the 50" deck. I'll have to find a 60" deck to put under it because my old deck is a little worn.

We used a 430 at Work, It was abused more ways than I can begin to tell you here. It had well over 3000 hours on it. But so help me , it started as good as a new one & ran just as good as one too!! Yes, Keep them both if possible. I have my eye on one , if I get the chance I plan to bring it home....

Around here I'm sure the asking price would be high on one. Its crazy what the Dealers around here ask for a used L&G Tractor. And it more then likely will look like its been wore out! And They will still ask a HIGH price for it! And will not hardly come off the price at ALL! Good luck!
