My 89 430 has been having trouble starting lately. Now it won't start at all. I changed the glow plugs and made sure the fuel lines were free of air. I'm getting a lot of black smoke from the exhaust when I hold the starter on. Sometimes it sounds like it wants to run but as soon as I stop holding the starter on, it stops. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Harbor freight one is junk. Used it twice on my TDI and stopped working. And to think people are putting harbor freight engines in JD's now days...

Have you measured with a multimeter that your getting 12v to the glow plugs?

Have you tried various throttle lever positions when cranking?

Does it seem like its turning over at a good speed, not that your battery or starter are getting weak?

I haven't checked the voltage. I figured if I'm getting that much black/grey smoke some of it must be igniting. I usually start the engine at half throttle but I tried all positions. It's got a fairly new battery. I'll check voltage today. Someone at church suggested pulling the injector out and run the starter to see if I'm getting good fuel misting.

I would check to make sure the fuel cutoff solenoid is pulling in. Normally it snaps in when your turn the key to the "on" position. But sometimes the relay burns out. If it is not pulling in, you are starving the engine. You can push it in with your finger if the pull in relay is not working. The hold in relay should keep it in place until you turn the key to the off position.

The fuel cutoff is working. I see it pull in when I turn the key. I'll check into getting or borrowing a compression tester. If I have low compression I don't of anyone in my area to take it to other then the dealer.

Steve,

You could just go ahead and check the valve clearances to see that nothing is set to tight. The CTM3 shows the clearance as:
Checks, Tests and Adjustments
Valve Clearance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.20 mm (0.008 in.)

Here is the compression test from the TM1591 if you don't have that page handy...
Diesel compression test from Tm1591.pdf (27.3 k)

11 volts isn't enough, hold key to on and wait 20 seconds then turn it over

also ohm out your glow plugs with the wire removed to see if you have 1 ohm, is you have more than .33 with them all connected then one is bad.

With new fuel pump the tractor still won't start. Was told to use starting fluid but I've read and talked to friends that say NEVER use starting fluid in a diesel. I left the block heater on for almost a day and a half, went out to try it and it started. Could I leave the heater on all the time without hurting anything?

If it has black smoke coming from exhaust it is getting fuel. I would think the valves being set too tight and the low compression are the problem now. DON'T use ether with glow plugs or an intake heater unless you like blowing things up!
