If you have the "non quick hitch" older style then there is a hub assy that sits on the output shaft of the gearbox and uses a keyway and bolt to make them spin. I would check that first but it might be a bad gearbox too, but lets hope not as those cost more new than a used blower.

There should be a shear bolt that is now missing. Unless the shaft twisted on the output of the gearbox.

I would guess there are 3 sheer bolts, one for each side of the auger, and one for the impeller.

If the gearbox is spinning, at least one of those 3 pieces should be spinning as well unless you managed to sheer all 3? How do you know the gearbox is spinning?

Some of the older ones had a gearbox where the input attaches, in addition to the gerabox on the auger, is that the box your talking about, if so something must be bad inside.

Let us know if its an older chest freezer 47 or a newer quick hitch one.

hey guys thanks for the responses. I had checked the rear shear bolt. it was intact. i didn't realize there was a shear bolt on the impeller side. that one is gone. just have to figure out how to get the piece of bolt that is in the shaft out. not easy to get in there and see anything. plus it is 10 degrees in the shop!!! doug

the gear box that the auger runs from has a shaft with a knuckle that has a collar that goes over the input shaft from the back gear box. whew what a sentence. if this makes any sense to you guys.

I don't think the key "got out" but more likely has cracked the hub or the key itself broke in two. I say that because if it was still there then everything would still be spinning. The key keeps everything spinning and the bolt keeps the hub from sliding back and letting the fan hit the housing. Not sure if that's how JD wanted it to work but that is what they do. I have had a had few of these blowers and they all had problems in this area. Hopefully your key is just gone or broke but there is a chance it cracked the hub too but either way you will have to pull the auger out and then slide the fan/hub assy out. There has been talk in the past about leaving the key out and just using the bolt as a shear point that way damage to the hub would be less likely but I haven't tried it so not sure how it would work.
