I have a 1989 318 that someone used self tap screws to attach the chute handle bracket to the pedestal and its not working so great as the screws are not holing well and the removable screen is getting destroyed. I have a adapter from a 1987 318 but it seems to interfere with the raised removable access screen. Anyone know what I am missing? do I have the
wrong bracket?

Normally, usually, the bottom of that bracket is bolted\mounted on top of the fender, not underneath.
If you replace the self tap screws with cap screws 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" in length (and nuts) and use spacers - ought to be able to install the access screen.

My 87 318 doesn't have a removable screen, your bracket looks to be correct. Bo posted as I was typing, and it looks like he has your answer. I don't use the spacers on my set up.
