I exploded both the ring and pinion gears on my #49 snowblower. I was able to purchase another #49 snow blower and I'm going to assume it's probably an older version as it has a 3-bolt gearbox versus my 4-bolt gearbox on the trashed #49. On my newly purchased #49 there are two fluid level plugs on the front cover plate. Again I
I'll assume that this older version is filled with gear oil rather than Cornhead grease. Is there a particular oil that fellow JD#49 owners use that they can recommend? Thanks in advance. Mike

I've been using 80/90 gear oil in mine for years. Seems fine.

Also, it might be worth verifying that the auger shear bolt is correct. In my experience, when the shear bolt fails, the first bolt that is found that fits the hole is the one that is installed. Using an incorrect shear bolt (that is probably harder that it is supposed to be) just transfers the increased load to the next weaker link, like the gear box gears.

That info on the last post is pretty neat and very much appreciated -- still though, which oil, what is John Deere AM30200M Lubricant? What is comparable \ same in 2022?
