Well, I know ever here in MN it will be a bit before first snow but but I had a small issue removing snowthrower from tractor this spring and want to get it corrected. Tractor is 1990 318.

I have used a 49 snowthrower for ~ 20 years but for the first 19 it was an old ~ 1973 short chute model that did a good job but I traded for a newer long chute 49 about same age as tractor when got a chance. The idler pulley bearings were seized so I got a regulation JD part and put it on. When mounting the thrower last fall, I noticed there was interference between the hydro lines where they come up and over the pulley when trying to thread the belt. There is a bit of travel along the pivot shaft and the bolt threads hit the hydro lines. I figured I just had the bolt head end/threaded end reversed so flipped it and everything seemed fine. I even took a straightedge to the engine PTO/idler/thrower driven pulley and everything lined up great. It worked great all winter and we had a decent amount of snow.

Now when taking the thrower off this spring, I just couldn't get enough travel for the idler puller to pivot down by driven pulley which it must to clear frame and remove from tractor. I never had this issue with 40 year old snowthrower.

So after all this if you're still reading, I look in the on-line parts diagram and from the "snow" end it appears it should be nut/idler arm/flat washers/pulley/lock washer/bolt head. The diagram calls out flat washers with quantities "AR" which I assume means "as required". There really aren't any required to get clearance from the arm to pulley as the pulley has shoulder to provide that clearance? Maybe a more general replacement part or earlier pulley didn't have shoulder and you needed a couple flat washers to get the required clearance?

So on my thrower I currently have from the "snow" side: bolt head/idler arm/pulley/lock washer/nut.

So would someone with a 49 blower accessible please take a look at what your fastener order is and help me out. thanks

Thanks Roger, I think I understand the purpose of washers... what I'm looking for is the orientation and stack up of the various parts... i.e. which end is bolt head, and how much of threads are sticking through nut etc.
