I am thinking about building a 4x4 140 with my grandpa. I have two extra 140 h3's sitting around and we are thinking it will make a cool toy. has anyone ever done this with 140's, what does the average articulated 4x4 garden tractor end up costing approximatley, is this pheasible or am i nuts to attempt this? We are also trying to decide which way to put them together, like others have done with 300 series machines or international 2+2 style.(The IH 2+2 ia a farm tractor). we both have mechanical/ welding/ fabricating experiance.

Dustin , the FIRST thing that comes to mind is ...... you have two EXTRA 140 h-3s sitting around ? I guess things are tough everywhere !

Seriously , one thing would be this . IF you intend on making the h-3 functional , I'm pretty sure you wouldn't need TWO of them . I'd be a GUY about it & find a ratty H-1 with a good trans for the donor . Then sell the extra H-3 to another member . That's just me though . Not trying to put your idea down .

Let me dig up pictures. Been done. Talk to Glenn Peterson for ideas, he has done a few bigger ones.

Key to success is how to control both hydros smoothly/in sync, and the articulation joint/steering. Likely want to power steering with 2 cylinders.

Styling to me can make or break the end product, just because its 2 rearends together if the body is all funky it kind of kills it for me.

Glenn Peterson's, unlike most of the ones built, his is a work machine, not just something that struggles to even move under its own power at shows.

Travis's dads which was built by Patt Prom

Wrong color but one of the best ones I have seen as far as looking factory.

Go for it Dustin---make it look like a 7020---can't beat that 140 styling.

Safety wish you may want to be seated on the front half verses the back half(like the 2+2) the wheel base is so short on this small 4x4's that there just is not enough leg room.
Just a thought!!! Glenn

That one has a yanmar diesel, and Travis can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think its only duty is the show circuit and display.

If you check out Patt Prom's website, he has a ton of different customs/modified, so I get, some are just way too far out there for me. The 1/2 scales are sweet.

Yes-currently it is a show queen. I was still in Wyoming without a welder or a L&G tractor (or the interest) when that was contracted out. Plan on next year to make it plow ready with mine and my brothers parts 317 tractors. The rear hydro is junk and leaks as well as both fighting each other too much.

Most 4x4's are cable controlled. But one I did see was hydraulically controlled with the pressure of one hydro running one cylinder and the other hydro running another cylinder on the slave hydro. It was one two 322's.

I agree-sell one H3 and find an H1 with a blown engine for the other parts you need.

they are both pretty much parts tractors. the other idea was to put a whole tractor in front of a whole tractor minus the front axle on the back one. that is a very nice 140 above but we were thinking more of what mr.peterson achieved with his. by the way mr. peterson would you mind sharing the ball park of what one of these costs?

The most challenging during my 4x4 build was trying to keep things in proportion so a it would look like the rest of the JD lawn and garden products. I had to purchase everything(no inventory at all)so you have a good start already, seems like $4000. was my total, however the largest commitment will be time, worked on this project just over 7 months full time, spent a lot of time making it look what I thought was right---It will be a big project for you and your Grandfather. Hope this is of help. Glenn

I have wanted to do this to a 140 for a bit. I just need to find one that is in sad shape like my dual was when I found her. I want to make it more of a quad track though. My next wish I guess. Good luck on your project.

Dustin, check out the Steiner 430s they are a articulating 4x4. They have one hydro positioned normally and the other one set upright (front pointing up). See page 16 of this PDF.

caribeturf.com/.../steiner.2381541.pdf

To control the hydros, they use a Sunstrand 15 split pump that pumps fluid to both trannys.

Good luck with your efforts. Ben

Can someone explain what I'm looking at in the photos above? Is that just one tractor pulling another without its front wheels? If so does it take 2 to operate or is the front one somehow controlled from the rear? Whatever it is looks neat!

This was fairly common in the two-cylinder era with the big JD's! Some drove from the rear tractor & some from the front.
