I finally got around to mounting 54" 4-way blade on my 1970 H3 for the first time. At first both side to side and up and down worked great.Yesterday I showed it to a buddy of mine but the down would barely move with no down force. It seemed like just the weight was letting it come down with no force. Up and tilt still work great but not down. Any help Please.

Carl, 140 tractors did not have down force in the hydraulics. It may have dropped faster previously if the tractor, air temperature or hydro fluid was warmer. If you push your lever all the way forward into the float position that will also slow down your drop speed .

Joe, i believe you are thinking of the 3pt hitch and sleeve hitch not having down pressure????
a front blade does have down force, if it did not it wouldn't be able to lift the front tires off the ground.

Carl any chance you are pushing the lever too far forward into the float position, causing the blade to drop only under it's own weight?

on my h3 if i raise the blade all the way up and then push the lever into the float position it takes longer for the blade to reach the ground then if i just push the lever alittle and make the cylinder push the blade to the ground.

Guys,

Depending which outlets you plug the lines into you should have down pressure and float on the lift/lower circuit. If you push the lever all the way forward into the detent it is in float and has no down pressure. If you push it just before the detent it should lift the front wheels off the ground.

To clarify, If you have at least two properly working hydraulic ports on the front of your tractor,140 or any 300 series, It will lift the front wheels of the tractor off the ground by using a properly working front blade.
First thing to check would be to see if it does or doesn't.
One port will supply down pressure on the front blade if it is properly connected to the tractor. Check where your hoses are connected to and make sure they are correct.

I may have pushed the lever to far forward to put it in the float position. I'll go out tomorrow and try pushing the lever just a little forward to see what happens. I do have a manual and yes I should read it! I did not know that there was a float position. Thanks for all of your great advise. When I learn how to put pictures on the post, I will send some of the restoration I did on the 140.

Carl my 140 h3 has tons of down force if you choose to use it. It will pick the front end off of the ground 4 inches if you want it to. If you push the lever part way forward then you should have all the drop you want untill you let go of the lever. If you push the lever all the way forward then you are in the float position and can follow the ground.
