Last fall I had an issue with the deck cutting off. Thought it was the PTO switch, but actually the PTO clutch was cutting off due to lack of voltage. Tracked that problem down to a lack of water in the battery. Topped it off and the mower ran fine for the last several cuttings last year and the first couple this year. Fired right up and everything is fine.

Yesterday I went out to mow again. Turned the key and nothing. I mean nothing. Not even a click click click. Kept trying it and about the 30th try it fired and cranked up. Mowed the yard and parked it. Tried it again. Tried another 50 times and got nothing.

Battery is reading 10V, I know that's low. But what I can't determine is how come the deck stayed on, but the mower won't even slowly turn over. Jumps off just fine of course.

Where do you think I should look first? I've got a multimeter and the technical manual.

Are you serious?
Your first paragraph you tell us the battery was a problem last year. Get a new battery.
10 volts is not enough.
If you still have problems then repost the symptoms.
just my advice for what it's worth..

If the battery at rest reads 10 volts it is essentially dead. A good battery at rest should read 12.5 volts. If the charging circuit is working battery voltage should rise to 13.5-13.8 volts with the engine running at fast idle. Battery voltage should drop to no less than 10.5 volts while cranking the engine.

You know it's nice that this kohler is magneto ingnitioned because it doesn't charge so I have been having to interchange batteries on my restored cub cadet 127 tractor. And I am getting sick of it I took the rectifier off and there are no wires broke but i don't know any thoughts I put a volt meter on it and still doesn't charge. I cleaned the magnets when I pulled the flywheel. I don't know I have a the sickle at mower out and used it for the first time in 30 years or better. Boy does that thing shake the incessant out of me any thoughts

Loren , sorry , but it's a little hard to figure out your post . Charging problems can be fixed by following the diagnostic procedures in the service manual . Not sure if you're saying the problem started when you put the sickle mower on or not ......
