Hi guys I'm sure this has bin gone over a million times but my 140 won't charge I've shined up the contacts on the key switch and on the voltage regulator I think that's what it is ? Aluminum finined with three conections bolted to the left hand side of tractor ! But when I pull either post from the battery it dies ! Could it be the voltage regulator ? I have one from a 74 140 can I switch them ? Please help ! Thanks Dale

Do not switch regulators one is a 10 amp system the other is 15 amps.

"But when I pull either post from the battery it dies !"...If you are taking a battery cable off the battery it will die because you are no longer supplying power to the points.
The 12 volts for the points goes from the battery to the key switch to the points.

Give us a voltage reading at the battery with it running and with it off. Also voltage (AC) readings from the 2 outside terminals on the regulator and a voltage reading from the center terminal (DC).

Thanks Drew I forgot about the points ! So used to checking charging systems on old vehicles ! I will have to check with a multi meter but the tractor is at the lake . Is there any simple way other than multi meter to check if it's charging ? Thanks Dale

Dale,

is your 69 a coil/points ignition, or a solid state system? I ask because the 69 140 I had was solid state, and that would run with no battery attached. if it has points/coil it will not.

I think you really need a multimeter for troubleshooting this problem. I think you can get a basic digital one in the $10-15 range. i do recommend digital.
