Hello all,

I just finishing rebuilding my Onan B48G in my new to me JD 420. Looking back in the manual I realized I may have missed an important step. When installing the connecting rods the manual states:
"The bearing cap must be tapped to properly align it with the rest of the connecting rod. Clearance varies on the journal if this is not done"
Should I be worried? I did not pay much attention to how the caps aligned with the connecting rod. Should I pull the engine and adjust the bearing caps?

Thank you,

Michael

I went back and looked at my service manual and found what you were referring to.
If you are referring to this:
6. Install and tighten nuts or cap screws evenly to
specifications. Hit connecting rod cap LIGHTLY with a
soft-faced hammer to align it with connecting rod.

I would not worry about it at this point provided you measured the proper clearances and installed cap and rod facing the proper direction using a torque wrench with the proper amount of torque

In other words if you did EVERYTHING ELSE step by step according to the manual you should be fine

Boomer-I have a small 32 page Service manual for B43E, B43G, and B48G and it does mention aligning the connecting rod caps as quoted above.

John-I ended up taking the motor out yesterday and looking at the connecting rod caps. They looked fine to me. I even took them off to see how much side to side play there was and it was little. The cap is not as wide as the actual connecting rod so I just made sure the cap did not stick out past the connecting rod. I should have waited for your reply!

I started the engine up yesterday with a normally open low oil pressure switch installed (should be normally closed) and the light came on signifying I have oil pressure. All was good and then the light went off. I guess I should find a gauge and see what pressure the pump is actually generating.
