Just bought a 140 and with a full charged battery engine runs like a champ however it will not hold charge something I believe is draining the battery. I just charged battery to 100% I waited 45 minutes and hooked it back up to charger and it showed 56% .....where should I start looking? Broken wire?

Took it off the charger at 85% and just now reconnected and it was at 68% but only took about 2 minutes and now it is at 92%. I had the charger on the battery connected for 45 minutes and 85% is where it stayed for 20 minutes.

You can't go by that charger to give you a true reading. My charger sometimes will not go above a certain % but then you unplug and plug back in again it is goes to 100% within a few minutes.

What I am asking, is disconnect the battery from the machine, and then charge it to 100%. Let it set 24 hours to see if it holds a charge. You could just have a bad battery, even if its new.

When the tractor is running, does it charge the battery? A voltmeter on the terminals when its running should show over 13 volts. If it does not charge the battery running it could be the voltage regulator or the stator winding on the engine bad. A bad regulator could also be draining the battery.
But you need to prove the battery is good first.

I'm pretty green to the electrical system but I cannot see where the voltage regulator is? I have the battery and battery bracket out and I see nothing like what I see online as a voltage regulator.?

So either the stator is bad or the voltage regulator is bad. I am not familiar with the 140 electrical system. On the 318 it is located on the engine sheet metal, 3 wires. Two connect to the stator and one is the DC + out that ends up going to the battery via some fuses. The DC- is the voltage regulator case ground.
Someone else that knows about the 140 needs to post the diagram for you.

Joe, you didn't mention what year your 140 is. but on my '71 140 the voltage regulator is a finned affair on the left side of the pedestal. It should have 3 wires going to it. The two outside wires are AC from the stator, and the inside wire is DC, with the tractor frame being the other side of the circuit.
With the engine running at half throttle, you should be seeing around 13 volts at the battery. You should read the battery voltage with the engine not running, then again with it running at half throttle. You should be seeing higher voltage with the engine running. If not, then some trouble shooting is in order.
Let us know what you're seeing, and we'll trouble shoot from there.

I decided.to try another battery and it was with that battery I had the 12.29. The machine is a 1972 14hp . Steve I will try what you mentioned and see what happens in the morning. I did try to start and it did every time? I still cannot see where the voltage regulator is?

Joe you are getting confused, the battery has nothing to do with your problem. Like I said in my post yesterday morning when you don't have at least 13 volts out while its running either one of two things.
Here is a You Tube video at least showing what a voltage regulator looks like, Yes I realize you don't have that tester.> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8OfCGV4Rgs

I have no voltage regulator.......likely the reason for my problem. So....in order to use this tractor I will have to be sure I charge the battery all the time.....or install a regulator.

Bill I wasn't trying to waste time just trying to figure out what's going on. I didn't realize it would work without the regulator and thought perhaps it was located elsewhere.....like I said this is all new to me. Sorry to have bothered you all.
