When I go down a hill or grade my 332's engine will start rapping and the engine put off black smoke. When I go up hill or operate on flat ground, no issues. Dealer said, it was water in my fuel. Changed fuel filter at his suggestion and have run about two tank fulls, still does it. I bought this about a month ago and had the dealer go through it top to bottom. Injectors were cleaned, compression test was done. All cyl above 375psi. Dealer did tell me previous ran heating oil in th engine. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
David

My understanding is that fuel filter is supposed to be a fuel water separator. At least that's what the dealer led me to believe. The other thing I'm wondering about is ultra low sulphur deisel. With a sulphur content of less than 5 ppm, there is significantly less lubricity in todays deisel, could that be causing a rapping problem in a 1991 tractor? But then it should rap all the time.

David.
I am confused when you say your engine is rapping. Do you mean bogging down and loosing power, or missing. I AM NO DIESEL TECHNICIAN, but I have heard black smoke usually means a fueling issue. and I am confused on why this happens just when you go down hill, unless its the pick up tube in the tank. I would think if you had water in your fuel, you would be seeing white smoke. Also, a good rule of thumb is to drain the tank, and change the fuel filter anytime you get water in your fuel. I wouldn't rely on the fuel filter to get the water out, its pretty easy to take the tank off and drain it. Thats what I had to do with my 330, when I got water in it. I guess the only suggestions I have would be to switch to off road/non taxed fuel, if its avaliable to you, And check your fuel pickup tube in the tank, as they are prone to breaking and falling off. I would also check and clean the screen on the end of the pickup tube. I would also suggest getting the CTM3, and service manuals to your machine, as they are a great help. Good luck, I hope your problems are resolved soon. Those 332 are great machines. I love mine
Hope it helps

Thanks Drew, the rapping sounds like someones taking a hammer and pounding on the engine block. I had the fender pan off today, didn't see how to take the tank off, but I'm sure I can figure it out. I'll try checking the pickup tube as well. I have been running "road deisel", isn't off road deisel "dirtier"? I do have the service manual, but I can't find the answer there. What is a CTM3?

Thanks again for your input.

I would look at the fuel lines because if they suck air you will get a miss and that is probably what you are hearing. Might also look at the pick up in the tank because of it happening going down hill the fuel is sloshed to the front of the tank and exposing the pick up in the tank. I am no diesel mechanic but something similar happened last winter with our 544E loader hear at work and it drove us nuts until we figured out that the machine was sucking air in around the fitting when it was starving for fuel.

Unscrew the hose clamps holding your fuel outlet and return line on the tank. The tank then should just slide right out after the fender deck is removed. (I don't think I am missing anything.)
As far as off road diesel, I don't know about it being dirtier, We have run it in the 330 since 1986 without any problems. Its just non taxed diesel fuel dyed red.
Thanks

How is it coming David,
I think you put a curse on me.
I was running my 332 last night, and it started missing. I either have water in my fuel, or trash. I am going to drain mine change the fuel filter, and put a little bit of conditioner in it. Hopefully I can get back on track

Sorry! Actually...I didn't get too it yet. The UPS man brought me some new toys from IMF, so I spent most of yesterday trying them out. I've just been out mowing my lawn this morning, which has some significant grades and no noise. But I'm going to run this tank of fuel down and double check it anyway. Good luck with yours.
