I have had the same problem since 1977. How the heck to do the install by your self. Well, I have not figured that one out. I have always had to have another person guide the drive shaft while I lift the front. after that it is pretty easy. I have tried to block it but for some reason when I move the tractor it gets bumped and moves everything out of wack and you have to start over. It is better with two people. JAck

I did get it on by proping a couple 2x4's side ways.then I put the tractor in neutral and just rolled it foward to the blower frame then just kicked the wood out of the way and the pins fell right in the slots.then I just played with the pto shaft and picked up the blower from the front till the ujoint went on and then released the spring pins.brad

Well guys,
I just mounted my blower on my 430 today. It's not a 400 , but I had one of those years ago, What I did , was when i had my blower mounted, I built a small dolly for the blower, about 2 inches or so from the ground. I put swivel rollers on it. It makes it easier to install the blower, and at the end of the winter season I just pull into my shed and lower the blower on the dolly, and disconnect. takes just a matter of seconds to detach, and I can install it in about 5 minutes or less. I also put my 430 in neutral to install that way i can move the blower on the dolley, or move the tractor to get the two attached while holding the pto. Hope this helps

My JD400 has a new sibling a 1993 455 with 1000 hrs, 50" blower, 48" deck, 50" 450 tiller, Hard cab, 3pt, 540 pto, quick hitch and around 10 other attachments.

The first this I noticed is the 93 model year only came with 16 inch front tires and 23 inch rear tires. When you have the 400 and 455 next to each other is there a noticeable difference between the two in tires sizes.

The first thing I want to do is change to 18x8.5-8 wheels on 5 bolt hubs in the front and 26x12-12 HDAP or lugs in the rear.
I was looking through the post but wasn’t able to find the answer to my upgrades.
I know you have the answer and look forward to the responses, so here goes:

1. With a 48 inch deck (have the optional power flow) will these larger tires work. That is will there be enough clearance between the deck and tires in both the raised and lowered positions.
2. Will these tires clear the fenders.
3. How would you prevent the hubs from sliding inwards on the existing spindle in order to preload the roller bearings. If you do this then the seal on the back side will press up against the stopper and rub away on it. I thought about a small sleeve or shim over the spindle that could be used to shoulder the inner bearing against, but then the sleeve would spin since the seal was wrapped tight around it.
Looking forward to the solutions.

Thanks, Robert

I have a 99 455. It came with 26x12-12 turfs, and they clear the fenders and both the 48" and 60" decks I have used with no problems. I can't say for sure, but the HDAPs are probably OK, not sure about the lugs.

Not sure why you're set on 5-bolts in the front - you can fit the tires you want on a center bolt wheel with a lot less time and money involved.

Congrats on the new machine.
I am willing to bet someone swapped out wheels and tires on it before you bought,
As far as I know 445/455 came with 18's up front and 26's on the back.
425 was available in the early years with 16's on front and 23's on rear but the 445/455 was always the bigger tires.
Maybe Roger or someone who was around these machines in 1993 or worked at a dealer back then can chime in.

I just came in from snowblowing, had a 4 foot drift on the driveway to remove. It sure is nice being enclosed in a cab.

AJ & Roger – The 455 is two wheel steer only.
I seem to remember a post somewhere that said JD needed to cut out the fenders to fit the larger tires. Not sure if it’s true.

Tim – The tires clearing the 48” deck is good news. I didn’t want to buy tires and be stuck with them.
The 5 bolt hubs and rims/tires were left over from another project that never happened, so I figured why not since I want larger tires for a little more clearance and they look good.

David – Good tip, simple but will do the job of holding the bushing.

Robert - I see you have a 48 deck with power flow and a 450 tiller. I recently purchased a bagger and am unsure how the bracket works with the 3 point angle brackets. Will the bagger bracket fit over the angle brackets or do I have to remove them? Thanks, Kevin

I have a 2000 455. I purchased an after market loader which works great, but I need more lifting capacity. The loader manufacturer says a "shim kit" is available to accomplish this.

Does anyone have any experience increasing the hydraulic lifting capacity of a 455? Or know what this "shim kit" entails?

Thanks!

John Deere did not offer a 'KiT' for that specific purpose , (I think) for liability issues . If they did , some people would be lifting 5-6 hundred Lbs . without adding reciprocal ballast , and tipping tractor over all over the place . But ..,

Many knowledge-able people on here have remedied the low lift capacity by raising the auxiliary lift pressure from (typically) 950 lbs. per square inch upto about 1250-1300 PSI . Mine was raised to the latter (1300) , and I am very happy now . I also have the requires 750 lbs. ballast in the rear .

It is a very simple process , with the hardest thing involved being the rear seat pan removal . There should be a write up in the archives somewhere , which is how I learned about it . I've personally done three (two 445s' and a 455)tractors to bring them up to task .

Did you get buy CTC loader ? Did it come with the required "loader specific" relief valve , as the John Deere 40 loader comes with ? That is another 300 bucks you should spend , if not so included with your none factory loader .

FWIW - My '93 445 came with the bigger tires from the factory . I also plan on using a seal bushing when I add the trailer hubs on my 420 with 1" spindles . Not sure how I'm going to do the 445
and 455 (metric 25MM) I have when it comes time for their new hubs , but they will also have a seal bushing welded to the inner axle , and for a stop shoulder for the bearings .

TimS/David,

Yes, I bought a CTC loader. I don't think it has the "loader specific" relief valve. I'd like to be able to lift the trailer hitch on my camping trailer with the bucket, which right now, the 455 can't quite manage. I'd guess a 400 lifting capacity would do the trick.

Can you tell me more about the relief valve and why I should buy it?

Thanks.
