Look what I found just on the other side of town. Guy advertised it as part of his garage sale as '67 110 with a deck, blade, and snowblower. Got there and found this! It is a 1968 140 H1 serial number 3834. It has certainly seen some use but starts and runs great with no smoke. It ran and functioned so well I couldn't say no!

Honestly I bought it for the blade and deck, (to use on my '72 140 H3), so I have to decide which to sell, the '68 140 or the '66 110. I don't have room to keep them both. Decisions, decisions!

Nice score! Is that a brass tag snow blade? The 1968 140's started at 1001 and I think the side tags went to 3500 and may haven't even gone that high. I have one that's a side tag and one that's just on the cut off.

The tractor is not a side tag. It has been repainted. The frame has a decent paint job but the fender deck looks like it was done with a brush. When I crawled underneath the tractor I saw several new parts so someone obviously did some work on it at one point. I wonder if the engine was rebuilt at some point because it runs so strong with no smoke. Hoping to get the oil and hydro fluid changed today.

I also got an original 1968 owners manual, a full set of gaskets, and some various parts in the deal.

The blade is a brass tag. I think it has seen its share of use as one of the mounting pins is broken off and the cutting edge is pretty much worn out. It is still functional and can lift the front of the tractor off the ground.

The deck is also a brass tag and is in amazing shape. No rust holes and no patches that I have found. It was repainted and had the bearings replaced. The blades are decent but need sharpening. I don't think it has seen much use before or after the "restoration".

The guy I bought it from said it was used primarily for snow removal at his job. It was supposed to come with a snowblower but it was "up north" and had been largely destroyed due to the various thins that had been run through it. I told him I didn't need it but perhaps I should go back today and leave my number with him so he can get a hold of me when he gets it.

I changed the oil today and topped off the hydro fluid. I will change the fluid completely later this week when I get a chance to get up to the dealership to get a new filter. The hydro whines quite a bit but is responsive and seems to work well. I've heard that the whine is normal, anybody have anything to say different?

With the fluids changed/topped I took it out and pulled the trailer with it to pick up leaf piles. The brakes are shot so that will be another project. I used the blade for a parking brake.

After running for a while I noticed a knock at lower to midrange RPMs. It is reminiscent of what Mike Duwe's new 140 was doing. So I followed his lead and adjusted the points gap. I ended up setting at 0.018 and the knock was much less pronounced. I still need to pick up a new plug so I'm hoping that could further improve the situation. The engine runs strong with no smoke, except for a slight puff on start up. It also backfires if I throttle it down quickly. Any other advice?

Mike, if you're reading this, what was the end result with your rig? Did you eliminate the knock?
