I have a 1983 317 with a Kohler 18hp Magnum and a 48 in newer deck. My belt for the mule drive broke and I can't read the numbers. John Deere is having problems finding me a belt that will work. Does anyone have any information?

Thank you

Hi Jay, I cut and pasted this response from the other thread you asked this in:

Jay, from my notes the belt to use with the 48" replacement deck (not the model 48 46" deck) is M119872. I have a 317 with the newer 48" deck and that is the belt I use. I'm not sure if having a Magnum changes that - do you know if the shaft height is the same as the KT17? I thought they were basically the same block.

From my memory when I first got this deck I believe the part number in the part catalog (catalog 2358) is wrong as it shows the 317 using the same belt as the 140, 300, etc. If you look at the belts for the model 48 deck (catalog 1069) and 49 thrower (catalog 1080) you will see that in general the 140, 300, 314, 316 kohler, etc use one belt and the 317, 316 onan and 318 use a different belt.

If you actually have a 317 with an onan then it is a completely different belt but I don't have first hand knowledge of that.

I have to say that a number of WFM members helped me out a lot when I first got the 48" deck and that Keeping It Green was very helpful as well.

Cliff, I do know that the M82718 doesn't fit. It is too short. Jacob, I will write that number down. For now I went with a M125218. I mowed for an hour and a half and so far so good. Thank you. I appreciate the help.

Jay, from the specs it looks like M125218 is 2" longer and a different angle (36 degrees vs 32 degrees). As long as you can get the tension correct I bet it will work just fine. I have a couple of seasons on my 317 with the 48" deck and am still using the same M119872 belt. I really like that deck. Right now while my 317 is down I am using my 318 with the 50" deck which isn't quite as good.

I sat at 2 different JD dealers for more than 2 hours each and for whatever reason they kept saying they can't tell what the lengths are. I will get the belt you mentioned and use that one.
This is my first John Deere. I was going to get a 318 but this 317 was more in my price range.

I appreciate all your help. Thank you
