I am currently replacing the motor in my 400 and am going to replace the sealed bearing in the front PTO since the motor is out. I was wondering what opinions are on replacing the needle bearing in the back of the front axle pivot? How does it get lubricated? Is it packed like a wheel bearing? Also when putting the pivot back in the front axle (since I took it out) do you just load it up with grease? I don't see a place to grease it once it is put together. How often should that pivot get greased? Thanks for the help.

Bryan,
The rear needle bearing just packs with grease. Best to just go ahead and replace it while you have it out. Bearings are relatively cheap and plentiful. The shaft is not.
The bearing from JD should have a small lip seal built in. Keeps most of the dust out. Orient it toward the rear.
If it is sealed on both ends it doesn't matter.
For the pivot; now is the time to fix the JD blunder. Drill, tap and zerk.
Grease axle hole and pivot pin before installation for maximum coverage. Rely on zerk for regular maint.

View of axle bottom.
Have fun, JZM
