Deck release rod

Hey guys, I was wondering what most of you suggest for the metal rods in the deck lift and variator handles. How do you protect them from further corrosion? Also, I'm really wanting to reuse the old thumb releases but they need to be worked down to remove corrosion and I know they will begin rusting soon after. Thanks

I put never-sieze on the knob threads and it always comes off. The other thing is do not let the tractor sit outside. I have my 214 since 1985 and neither lever has never gotten stuck yet. Roger
