I have a chance to purchase a Front PTO attachment for a JD 400 and i'm considering it because i don't see them often. But i have to ask, what exactly is it used for? I guess i'm trying to decide if i need or will ever use it.
The front PTO could be used to power small stationary farm equipment like a bale elevator. Years ago around here the rule was if a garden tractor had a 540RPM PTO it was tax exempt, as the PTO made it a "farm tractor" to the taxman. Sometimes unused PTO attachments for garden tractors can still be found in barns and sheds covered with forty years of dust!
Casey, if you can get it without busting the budget, it makes a nice conversation piece, even if you don't have a use for it.
I haven't seen one on a 400 tractor either, but this one on a friend's 140 and corn sheller should be similar.
Bill, if you ever seen one on the front of a 140, they very similar. I have one for my 140, which is belt driven. What part of K.C. are located? Maybe we could compare notes someday.
Here you guys go. The first picture shows the bottom and the second is upside down. I sold this to another member as I had no use for it. It had little, if any use. The actual name for this is the model 543 Front PTO made for the JD 400. It would have fit the 420 and 430 because of the bar across the lower portion.
Interesting. I can't tell from the pictures, but it looks like the JD400 rear PTO gear box. Wonder if it could be adapted to the rear of a 400 to run 540 implements?
It's definitely a different case than the rear pto. This is a 72:18 gear reduction (4:1), which should give around 500 rpm if your pto is turning at 2000 rpm.
Just an update. I picked up the PTO for $150.00. It is in pretty good shape, just had some barn dust on it. Now all I need is something to hook up to it .
Mike, I have a 543 front PTO for my 430. I haven't been able to find the parts catalog online at JDParts. Could you please email me the diagram if you still have it? techarch at live dot com.
If there is a catalog online, let me know what the number is so I can look it up - thanks!
