Craig,
Welcome to the forum.
Have you tried the JDparts link on the front page. It may show you what you need, but not sure. Any 56 experts out there with some advice?
first off thanks for the welcome this forum is awesome...second, i found a pdf of the manual and figured it out..got it running tho it still slips out of 2nd gear...ordered a new slider because i realised that the divets the balls set in for 2nd were worn done so any bump or vibration was allowing it to slide outthe parts house had one more and the part is discontinued so i got lucky once again..now i am working on painting her till the part gets in i will post some pics when done...thanks tho..hoping this is the first of more to make a collection...
Welcome to the party! You own a piece of history with you 56. I have a 57 with the exact same transmission. I was playing with mine last week and had some issues putting the slider back in place. It can actually work both ways in. Right way you'll have R N 1 2, wrong way you'll only have R N 2. It definitely takes some finese to get everything lined up. But after a couple smokes and a few choice words I finally got it all figured out. Did you order your slider from a JD dealership or somewhere off the net. I'm always looking for odd ball places that actually carry parts for these lil odd ball tractors.
actually got it through a JD dealership but they had to order it from a parts house in a town about 30 min away and they had one more wasnt cheap tho..but i didnt have to pay for the lawnmower so if thats all i have to buy (which it is) then i will only have $70 in it including paint..and i had it the other way and yep it was R N 2 so i flipped and it was good...thanks for the welcome tho..can't wait to get her altogether and mow the lawn with it soon got her all painted up today..just need to sharpen the blade and put the deck back on and she is good to go till i get that piece
Since you got the deck off, may as well check the belts. To check the driveshaft belt, you can literally tilt the mower on it's back and leave it there for easy access.
also wondering does anyone know where i can get the body piece that wraps around the seat and motor that says 56 on it mine is missing it..
If you are talking about the fiberglass piece I have one that isn't broken but the paint is cracked on it in various places. If that is what you are looking for I'll try to send you some pictures of it. -Steve
yeah if you could that would be great i really appreciate it Steve
when looking @ the pics Steve sent me i noticed that the whol for his gas tank is on the opposite side as mide and the tube framing on the back behind the motor looked diff also wondering if i post a pic if of mine if someone can tell me if it is really a 56
