Will the engine from a rear engine JD 68 fit into a front engine JD 70? I would like to restore the 70 but it was missing a head when I got it.. along with a broken hood missing grill and supports and gas tank. I found a head at a show but the engine in the 68 is complete and ran when it was parked. Thanks for any help

No. Briggs versus Tecumseh. I will show you a picture of my 70 with a Briggs in it but you can't use the PTO and must modify the mounting plate. It requires a new front belt and was about as easy as putting a Ford into a GM product. Roger

hmm.. I need to figure out something. I have 2 tractors left to restore. 1 is a 70 and the other is a 110RF ser# 4599... I assume thats an early one and its complete but it would be a complete tear down and blast and paint but the 70 would be sand and paint and a few parts and an engine..I guess I just need a project and the 70 looked like the next one.

Just to confirm, your saying the 68 engines did have a charging system? Was it regulated or not?

I've had five of the 68s around here. Some are set up to charge, some aren't. Serial number 120,001 and above equipped with a model 191707 engine should have a charging system. If the non-chargers are in good condition, they start immediately and that makes them a no-problem system if you charge it once a year.

Roger, diodes just steer current, they don't regulate how much there is.

I dont know that my 68 engine did have charging, I didnt see any extra wires coming out of it.

Tractor is long gone, no idea what it's serial number was.

Good to know they will start for a long time without a charge, but if a guy added lights I bet that would not be the case.

I didn't explain myself right. The diode only makes it DC but the system is very small and is basically just a trickle charger as far as current output is concerned. The current output is so small that when these engines were used with lights the ran the lights off the AC side of things as the DC side couldn't charge the lights and charge a battery. This was very common with magneto Briggs motors on small riders/lawn tractors in that era. Roger

Roger, forgive me if I have asked before, but what model/hp is that briggs in there? Looks a lot more compact than the one out of my 68, and the carb is on the other side...

It is a newer pressure washer engine (heavy flywheel) and is a model 675 that I bought at the Rock River Thresheree. I believe the pressure washer was a Homelite but really do not remember for sure. I have seen 675 rated anywhere from 6 to 6 3/4 HP when Briggs was still doing that. This one doesn't have a HP rating. It is a 12 cubic inch engine. Roger

Roger, I believe the 675 is for 6.75 ft lbs of torque (and thats gross, not net), which likely means its more like 4hp.

At one point they could have been calling them a 6hp, but that may have been before the HP lawsuit.

Here is the stocker for the 70:

Engine Type: Tecumseh VH70

gasoline

1-cylinder

air-cooled

Displacement: 245 cc [15.0ci ]

Bore/Stroke: 2.75x2.531 inches [70 x 64 mm]

Power: 7 hp [5.2 kW]

Rated RPMs: 3600

I have a Briggs book that calls it a 6 3/4 HP engine. It is giving up 3 cubic inches on the VH70 which still have if I can get it to start all the time. The only part I haven't replaced is the rings so that will be next and then my 70 will have the short block that replaced the original engine. There is nothing wrong with the Briggs and it has plenty of power. I can push dirt with the factory blade at 1/2 throttle in second gear and it will spin the ag tires before killing the engine. I thought the 4 HP Briggs were 9 cubic inch motors. Roger

Gotcha, was not sure if you did any ground engaging work with it or not. Sounds like it works fine. I'm on tecumseh #3 for my 70, going to try to get this one working, if not some variety of other engine will go in its place.

Got it running about a month ago and didnt have any governor response so I parked it, came back and found a puddle of oil next to a puddle of gas. Needs a carb rebuild and oil pan gasket.

For what its worth SEW has the same spec number 126T-0131 engine I have and they list it as Quantrum 6.5 HP. That might be a bit optimistic. It is also a pressure washer engine . I believe that is what the T means in the spec number. 12 cubic inches is roughly 200cc and the Clone engines of that size still are listed at 6.5 HP also. Roger
