Whenever I run the deere which is weekly during grass season there is a noticeable amount of smoke around the front of the engine, but the exhaust looks good not dark by any means and it don't burn oil. And then today I was able to start it and run it for the first time today after changing the main jet it is still doing the smoking and then I took off the air filter and noticed that one of the screws that hold the plate to the elbow was missing and I'm really thinking it went in the engine, so I guess it is time for a tear down, is this something I should be able to take on myself? I'm a aircraft mechanic so I know my way around a tool box just want to know what I'm getting myself into and if there are any pointers out there or if any of you on here are from Nebraska or know someone out here I could talk to. Thanks for the help.

If this is for the Tecumseh tractor make sure you can get the parts for it before you do anything. My 1967 112 swallowed a carburetor screw sometime in its life. If you look at the top of the piston it looks like someone took a tiny ball peen hammer to it all over the top. Never did find the screw so I am assuming it went out the exhaust. Still seems to run fine. Use the manual I gave you the directions to find and follow it religiously. That is the Tecumseh cast iron engine bible. If you work on airplanes it won't be a problem but the things you do may not fix your problems. Oil is cheap but the parts to fix it will not be. Roger

David Some smoke at start up is more of less normal. The engine needs to warm up to get all of its clearances correct at operating temperatures. It may just be smoke from using the choke to start it. I would first get the carburetor so it works well at all RPMs. I would also make sure the breather is clean, the oil drain back hole in the block is clean and open and all the parts in the breather are installed correctly. The outside parts can be installed upside down. If you look at the part behind the outer plate you will see small drain holes in it. Make sure the holes are open and at the bottom. All of this is listed in the manual. Only you can decide if the smoke is to much. Roger
