Is it a bad idea to sandblast fiberglass? Or should I just sand it down?

Yes, That is a bad idea. It will take the paint off and dig in to your fiberglass. You can use paint stripper meant for Corvettes or as you said, just sand it. The stripper will not damage the fiberglass in any way.

Unless the existing paint is a problem I would just sand it down Issac.

You could also use a razor blade to strip off the old paint. I've seen entire Corvettes done that way. It's a lot of work though.

Sandblasting is a bad idea on soft material. If you old paint is adhered well there is no need to remove it. Just repair and featheredge as needed, prime, block sand and paint.

What do you use for the featheredge?
I remember years ago I had green magic. I can find that anymore.

The old red or green glazing putties were just really thick lacquer primers. They tended to shrink when dry and took a long time to do so. They are almost all gone now, replaced with a two part glaze that's just a thinner version of polyester body filler. Get a container and hardener at a body shop supplier, or a good parts store.

On this 70 hood I low pressured sand blasted it then Epoxy primed it then painted it . I am happy with the results.
