I know you guys were wondering what Ive been building lately. Well, here it is. Its a 400 with a Wankel rotary motor out of a Madza RX 2. It has a turbo from a Corvair Monza Spyder on it. These motors I hear will turn 10000 rpms with no trouble. I have a throttle stop on it at 4000 rpms. Very smooth running motor with very few moving parts. Hooked it up to the two speed hydro.I will be taking it to the shows I attend this summer along with the Low Rider and the G. I. Deere. See me there.

Bill,

Great work as usual!!

Stock Mazda Wankel engines are very smooth across the rev range. I remember my early RX3 sedan having a distinct increase in power at about 4000 RPM at full throttle -- I think that may be where the advanced plug started to fire and the carburetor secondaries opened up fully.

From friends that raced these engines, the very high RPM is best obtained through vastly improved breathing...and since these are piston ported induction systems (no intake or exhaust valves...) that would involve "bridge porting" where the port is enlarged and then a second port opened up on the other side of this "bridge" where the apex seal wipes the rotor chamber wall where the ports are located. Some very clever and precise mods were all the rage as these engines were getting tuned for max output by the racers.

As others have said above, we have to see and hear it run!! for those of us too far away to make your show schedule, a video is a good start...

Thanks for posting.

Bill,

Another cool build and welcome to the Black Sheep Squadron (a.k.a. 400 owners). Looks like you shoe-horned that in without having to cut the frame. Any drive line mods? And of course Where are you planning to exhibit this year?

Guys, thanks for the kind words. The turbo was added by the last owner of the motor. Yes, the Expo and OVAM is on my schedule along with Portland and a few others. A video is in the works. Top speed? Can turn the hydro over 5000 rpms with out destroying it. Im already working on my next, a tandem axle 317 with a deck and a hydraulic dump bed, with both axles driving. Better than a Gator 6 x 4.

Neat, but I would have left the turbo off, then it would have for the most part fit in the stock frame other than the carburetor, turbo blocks a lot of the hood and makes that side a lot wider.

Video would be cool for sure.
