Could someone provide pics of exactly where the gap needs checked on the front PTO for a JD 316 onan. I've seen a couple but am unsure of what I'm looking for. Does the pully have to come off in order to do this?

Hi Tim - The pulley does not have to be removed, nor the belt. I don't have my 318 any longer, and I checked my photo library, and no pics of the PTO clutch. If you look at the PTO clutch, you'll see three lock nuts (with plastic inserts most likely) that have springs behind them. Those are the adjustment nuts. (I've been told, but have not seen, some PTO clutches have four adjustment nuts.)

Around the outside diameter of the clutch, next to each spring loaded adjustment nut, there should be a slot. This is where you slip a 0.018" feeler gage into, and then tighten the adjacent nut to achieve a slight drag. You then repeat this procedure at each spring loaded nut location. Adjacent to each spring loaded nut, there is a slot for the feeler gage to slip into. After you have made the adjustment at all three (maybe four?) locations, it's a good idea to repeat the process twice more at each location. Making the adjustment at one location, affects the other two, so by repeating twice, the adjustment is fine tuned. Hopefully someone will post a picture. - Dave

Tim,

Here are some generic photos that might help. The first is from a 430 I believe, and the second is from a slide show from the clutch manufacturer, Ogura. The last picture is of a 420 adjustment...but all of these are representative of what you will find on your 316.

Picked up a FREE GX75 on Sunday. Guy got it tangled in his fence so It damaged some of the plastics. He said it ran but it was out of gas. Didn't care about hearing it run cause the price was right. He put a new plug in it though just to be nice. Got it home and wouldn't start. Fuel shut-off is plugged. Cleaned it out and still wouldn't run. Checked for spark and I had some. Pulled the plug and it was the E3 economical brand. Replaced that with a new NGK and runs great! Possibly just a dud plug, but I won't use any in the future. I am hoping that someone has a pdf or scans of a manual. Either owner's or service will do. I can't find one anywhere else and would like a digital copy. I need to find the belt tensioning adjustment, if any, 'cause this belt got caught and burned. Thanks!
