Woooo Ok, I rebuilt my generator and it seems to be making a whirring sound is gets really hot. Also I'm measuring 17.7 volts at the battery with the voltmeter while the motor is running. Just installed a new voltage regulator and all new wiring on the tractor as well. Just to verify on the wiring the Solenoid connects to the L terminal on the generator and the Field Terminal on the Generator connects to the Field terminal on the voltage regulator correct?

The generator rebuild included new coils, new armature, new bearings, and new brushes. Plus a good cleaning of the housing. The motor runs great, aside from the whirring sound and the fact the generator is getting really hot. The generator light goes off as soon as the motor starts up.

Any Ideas? If I had gotten counter clockwise generator coils would the motor still work? And could that cause the heat problem? I know I ordered clockwise, but they may have sent the wrong ones by mistake. Not sure what to do at this point.

Ok, I wonder if that is the issue. The one I used I got out of my manual which is a reprint from davenport tractor. Do you think that would cause the generator to get hot? Or is it normal for the generator to heat up?

Ok I think I located the corrected diagram. My manual shows the pink wire from the coil meeting into the red wire at the ignition switch when it should tie into the orange wire. I made a notation in my manual. However, the wiring harness I purchased is wired correctly on the tractor so that eliminates that possibility. I sent the regulator back for a replacement which should take about a week to eliminate the possibility of a bad regulator.

I have never felt the generator while running, but I have never seen over 14V at the battery either. I seem to remember reading about two different kinds of VR, one that is positive ground and one that is negative. I assume you got the correct one for the tractor???

I also don't have any sound out of mine while running. I have rebuilt 3 with new bearing and brushes and they all were making sounds before. Typical bad bearing sounds. Quite afterwards. Are you sure you put the two collars back correctly? One sits on the armature shaft inside and one outside before installing the pulley.

The voltage regulator was listed as for the tractor, but I had ordered it on ebay from who knows where. Also it was marked for both negative and positive ground. I have returned it and ordered one from HAPCO to be certain.

On the rebuild I did do new bearings and brushes, but may have gone too far replacing the coils and armature as well. I treated it as replace everything and go; what could go wrong right? Which may have been my fatal mistake. Not too sure what the noise is, could be a collar rubbing but I suspect something electrical. Maybe it is arcing on the inside?

14V is what I was expecting to see, I did try bypassing the voltage regulator going from the generator to ground with a voltmeter and was reading 17.7 Volts that way. Which is also what I read at the battery. Atleast that's what lead me to believe the regulator was not working.

Can anyone verify if generator Delco 1101970 would be a functional replacement for a 67. I haven't received a new regulator yet, but did come across a used generator for cheap. However it was originally painted black with green over the top.

Ok, thanks for the replys. I'll see how it works when the new regulator comes in. I may have a spare if the regulator works the bugs out of the other one. The previous owner painted over the decal on the generator on the tractor so I didn't have anything to compare the numbers to.

Well I am beyond confused at this point. I have completely new wiring, have tried two different generators, and 3 different regulators and I am still getting 17.9 volts at the battery when the motor is running.
