Used to be semi-active years ago, but kind of abandoned my tractors. My uncle recently passed and they are selling the property where I stored my Deeres so I've been getting them ready to move in town. I have a 214 and a 212. The 212 went down several years ago so I bought the 214. The 212 has hydraulic lift and the 214 doesnt...Since the 214 is the runner I want to convert it to the hydro lift. Would it be easier to swap the running 214 motor to the 212 or swap the 212's hydro to the 214? I"m leaning toward the motor into the 212 as the paint is better, plus already has the lift linkage for the front blade as well...

Any thoughts???

Sounds like the connecting rod went in the 12hp engine. Pull it out and rebuild it would be my suggestion. Its always nice to have 2 running tractors instead of a Frankenstein tractor made up from 2 different models. Those old single cylinder Kohlers are easy to rebuild and the service manual is online on Kohler's website last I looked or easily found on ebay/amazon.

Also the tractors need the same engine cradle style. Both need to be 78 or newer or 77 and older.

I wonder if it was smoking before it went out. Would be interesting to know if a valve is stuck open.

I would think a couple bolts on the engine would be an easier swap. Hydraulics can and tend to get messy and rather involved.

Personally I’d rather do an engine swap.

Dont really have room for 2 tractors....and I have 4 currently...212,214, a Simplicity 700, and my grampa's Craftsman...They will be living outside under a tarp till I get something else figured out..

The engine bases are different depending on the cradle. My 212 has a solid stripe but has the newer 2 piece cradle .

Plus one for the engine swap. Just make sure the engine cradles are the same and check how each flywheel is secured (internal or external threads on the end of the crank) If you have one of each you will need to figure out a solution for the Hydraulic Pulley that mounts to the crankshaft. Hopefully everything is the same.
