Just in case anyone wants to see how the predator starts in -4 degree temperatures, I uploaded a video to youtube. Predator 670 cold start: http://youtu.be/bDQtz9r2UE4 I hope it works I am new to uploading and youtube. For the record it took a few cranks, however it does use the manual fuel pump instead of the electric and it is always slow to start after it sets a few days. I had the electric pump hooked up in the beginning with clear gas hose. I could turn on the key watch the gas fill the hose and it would almost immediately start. After changing to manual pump on the advise of a few on this site it is slow to start. Still it impressed me how good it started with the temperatures at -4. I apologize for the poor quality video.

bulb primer for a boat could cut down on cranking time and is a simple inline add on

two pumps in a row might be too much pressure

use just one

Dennis.. I ran mechanical and electric pumps at the same time on a K532 for several years. I just connected the hose from the elect pump to the mech pump inlet. Never had any fuel delivery issues at all but the mech pump eventually started seeping oil around the base where it was mounted on the engine so I removed it and installed a new block off plate I got off eBay. The elect pump is still going strong.

Thanks Army. Justus I think it just has so far to pull the fuel that it takes several cranks to get it back up to the carb. I noticed when I ran the electric pump if I turned the key on a waited just a few seconds it fired right up.

Dennis that is why I have an electric pump on my 214. Yesterday at -5 I started it for the first time since October. Turned on the switch. Waited a couple of second until the carburetor got filled and started first crank. Roger

One thing with electric fuel pumps, if you don't have a pressure regulator you might want to put a Tee in the line were it meets the carburetor and run another line back to the fuel tank. Unlike a mechanical or vacuum driven pump they run all the time, which could flood the carburetor, a tee and a line back to the tank allows the excess fuel to return to the tank.

Mechanical and vacuum pumps do run all the time. My electric pump only puts out 1.5 psi and I ordered it that way. Carb won't flood with that low pressure as the float and needle can stop the flow.
I disconnected my old pump (capped the line) and left it installed on the engine as I did not have a blank off plate.

I don't know the answer on the built-in pressure regulator Dennis. Where's Harold?

When I hooked up the electric pump on the 400, the fuel line was just long enough to slip onto the mech pump inlet. It was too short to go straight to the carb. So I thought what the heck and connected it to the mech pump. The hose length was the only reason I did it. There was no advantage to leaving the old pump in the loop. Never caused any fuel delivery problems though.

I looked in the 400 manual and it claims the standard fuel pump on the 400 goes into bypass mode when fuel is not needed. The manual stated that the key could be turned on with the pump running and the engine off and not flood the carb.

That sounds about right Dennis. I accidentally left the key on a few years ago on a 400 and when I came back an hour later the pump was still chattering away like it usually does. No flooding or other issues from it. The tractor started right up like it always does.

FYI, SEW says the JD400-FLY-H is NLA. I can't find one on eBay, either. I already ordered a Predator for my 400; any ideas? Anyone have the specs on the adapter? One of these days I'll get my milling machine running...

Also, the K532 is long gone from my tractor. I have one of the motor mounts (the front, I think), but not the other. Anyone have a dimensioned diagram of the adapter mounts they made for the Harbor Freight engine?

Thanks!
