dan i don't have a compression guage handy to check, but it will vary depending on condition of battery, starter, oil weight and things like that.

a few guys on this site have said try to roll it over backwards by hand and if its really hard to do then compression is good.

me personally, i take the spark plug out and stick my thumb over the hole and crank the engine over with the starter, if it sucks and blows agianst my thumb then i say it has enough comp to run

later

Hello all!

I recently acquired a 19 year old John Deere model 325 garden tractor with a 48 inch mower deck from my dad who has decided to give up mowing his own grass at the age of 81. The tractor is in excellent shape as he has had it serviced every year and it runs great. He didn't use it last year at all and I loaded it up on my truck and brought it home a couple months ago.

When I got it home and started it up, I couldn't get the blades to engage and the primary deck drive belt that connects the PTO sheave to the mower deck sheave was very, very loose (so much so that it would just slip off when trying to engage). I figured that maybe the belt was just worn so I bought another (John Deere brand OEM cross referenced in the original owner's guide which came with the tractor) and, while it did not fall off it just barely engages the blades and they move like a ceiling fan on low. This belt is also clearly too loose and yet I have tripled checked and it is the correct part number (Original part # M118684 now replaced with part # M143019).

Next, I took a long piece of string and measured the inside circumference between the tractor drive sheave and the mower drive sheave and it is 60 1/4 inches. The effective length (outside circumference) of the M143019 belt is 63.386 and the belt is .410 thick so the inside circumference is 62.566 inches making it 2 1/4 inches longer than my string measurement.

There doesn't appear to be anything bent anywhere. The mower deck goes on and off easily, all the spindles turn freely, the PTO engages correctly, the deck hanger is straight; the mower deck is level, the tension spring is not broken and the mower sheave moves about 3/4 of an inch when you engage the tension rod (which I would think would be about what you would expect). At this point I am going to track down a 60 inch belt and give it a try but I know there HAS to be a reason the OEM belt is about 2 inches too long so I want to know if anyone has any ideas about what the issue could be. I MUST be overlooking something but I am tapped out of ideas so I am hoping one of the JD experts here can help me.

Thanks!

Did you move the chrome lever on the left side of the deck so that is tightens the belt? Is the lever even there? The lever goes through a 180 degree movement from back to front to tighten the belt. I suspect something is messed up with the belt tightening lever. Stop at a dealer and see if they will print you that part of the 325 manual. If you can't get help I can take a picture of the lever on my 345. Welcome to WFM. Roger

Welcome to WFM, Don!
If everything else proves out to be working properly, and it seems you have checked things out pretty closely already, the 325 also used a 44" deck that uses a primary belt (M115776 61.299") that is about 2" shorter than M143019.

Is the secondary belt and everything under the safety shields OK?

Hi guys!

Roger - Yes, the tension lever is there and moves the full 180 degrees and it moves the spindle forward about 3/4 inch forward when engaged. I do have the manual (the original that came with the tractor and the online version as well as the full repair manual for the tractor and mower deck in PDF format.)

Tom - In researching the issue I noticed that 44" deck belt too but my deck is clearly marked as a 48 inch deck with the stickers on it but I keep wondering if that belt might work. All is well under the shields. The secondary belt is much older then the primary belt and cracking and needs replacing but it is taut and the spindles still move freely so I'm not going to replace it until I get this issue resolved. Still, that 44" inch deck belt looks like it might be the proper fit....
