I have a 314 that has 10 hours on the engine. If you let it sit and run at high RPM you can hear a slight miss in it. Just rebuilt the carb which is set as close as I can get it to perfect, has a new ignition switch, new points and condensor, plug and timing with a light shows the "S" mark in the hole in the blower housing. Not quite centered but really close. I did find the wire to the + side of the coil loose and tightened it and some of the miss went away. All wiring was checked for continuity and found to be in good condition.
My question is; Where to start in eliminating this miss? Possible bad condensor or coil or possibly going back through the wiring? I went through the Kohler trouble shooting guide. Maybe I missed something and need to go through it again.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,
Do you get a high-speed miss under load? If the miss is just under no-load, is it actually just from governor response? If so, try setting the governor a little less sensitive. Also, maybe the engine is not totally broken in at 10 hours.

Harold,

I didn't notice the miss when I was mowing yesterday. I guess I'll wait a while to see what happens. Which way would I have to move the spring if it continues to do this?

Thanks,

Bob,
If you want to try decreasing governor sensitivity, move the spring to a hole in the governor arm further away from the governor pivot shaft.

I would not think a governor would cause a "slight miss", only surging. If the governor does not move the throttle when you are hearing the miss then that is not it.

I am more inclined to think it is a valve that sticks open a bit at high RPM under low load like you described. If it doesn't do it under load I would not worry about it much. You might try some Seafoam in the gas and the oil and see if it helps keep the valve from sticking.

It could also be running a touch lean, if you pull on the choke slowly will it get rid of the miss before it starts making the engine slow down?
