I'm getting close to repowering my 318. I'll be replacing the B43g with a new Honda. Wanted to get some feedback from others who have already done this. What are some of the other things that I may need? Like I'm thinking fuel pump and 12VDC relay for the starter.

The muffler from Honda is HUGE. I need to cut down the one for my GX690, as it sticks up above the hood support bracket. Also, I raised mine up with 1.25" square tubing to bring the centerline of the crank up to where the Onan's is. Be sure to get the Honda stub shaft, makes the driveshaft fab easier.

For mine with a GX670 I choose to use the original muffler but I had to do major modifications.
Mine is bolted directly to the plate like the Onan to help for the muffler and keep it colder but I had to replace the belts.
The fuel pump was include with the motor.
Partial part list...
Honda parts:
Muffler Top Mount - Left Discharge 1 piece
Auxiliary PTO Shaft - Flywheel Side
VALVE, OIL SHUT-OFF
SWITCH, OIL PRESSURE
Other parts:
1 relay 12VDC NC
1 relay 12VDC NO
1 Drive shaft Yoke #6 Weasler
1 V belt for the mower
1 V belt for the snow blower
Great engine

Good luck!

I will say this, when the Honda muffler is used that thing is quiet. Way quieter than I would have imagined. I used the same throttle cable, all you have to do is take apart the stock Deere control and swap the short throttle cable for the one in the eBay link. You can go a step further and wrap it in heat shrink tubing, keeps dirt/grease out and looks stock.

Could you or someone else tell me the diameter needed in the firewall foam for the Honda repower in the 316/318/420?

Thanks again!

Dan,
I'm curious about the difference between the new GX630 and the GX690.
With the new GX630, the shaft is smaller at 1".
Then an adaptor 1" to 1 7/16" is needed or a new clutch.
The price difference between both engine is around $300.
But for the big one the original clutch will fit without the adaptor.
Then the difference become less than $300.
How much did you paid for the adaptor?

Andre it is like most manufacturers did in that they put a HP on the engine to meet what the OEM person wanted. Often without changing anything. In small push lawn mowers here in the states it got so bad that a Class Action Lawsuit was filed in about 2000 and most of the engine people no longer post HP on any small engine. Briggs for example had a 12 cubic inch vertical shaft engine that could be called anything from 4.5 to 7 HP without much of or any change in the engine, Air compressors were the same way. I have 3.5 HP Sanborn that when the air compressor companies got sued was rated up almost 6 HP with everything still the same. Honda did the same things and they revised all of their 25 HP engines back down to 20 HP at one time. Tecumseh did it the other way. When Sear wanted an 8 HP engine for a lawn tractor Tecumseh took a standard HH100 10 HP engine and put a restrictor plate between the carburetor and the engine block and called it the HH80 or 8 HP engine. There were no other changes made to the engine except for that part and a lower price to Sears. It is really all about marketing. Roger

Roger,
They replace the label "24 hp" for "GX670" on the later Honda like mine.
And on the spec sheet for the GX670, the 24 hP became 20.5 hp.

I made a quick evaluation to compare the Honda new vs. old hp rating.
I just use the same ratio, it's not accurate but maybe good enough to compare.

Then the new engines with the old rating is:
GX630 20.8 hp = 24.4 hp
GX660 21.5 hp = 25.2 hp
GX690 22.1 hp = 25.9 hp

It's not very different but I still prefer the GX690.
