How much oil goes in that engine? I need to replace it but I don't know how much to buy

Also I was thinking 15w 40 since it seems to have a good range. I am in the mid-atlantic not severely cold here...

Thanks,

Neil

I use 10w30 Mobil 1 synthetic in my 455.I live in Georgia not much cold weather here and no snow so machine does not get used much when it is cold.I used mine to day to move some leaves with temperatures in the low 50's.If it were colder I would not be working in the yard anyway. As for coolant I use a pre mixed solution made by Honda because I get it cheap. If you buy coolant and dilute it yourself make sure to use distilled water.Chemicals in regular tap water are what aid in corrosion. That is why most vehicle manufacturers sell pre mixed coolant. There is no problem with mixing it yourself just use distilled water. These are just my opinions I am new to diesel's but have been an auto mechanic on gas engines for over 10 years.

I use Rotella T 15W40 in my 330 year round with no starting problems It even started the other evening when the temps were about -4*below. I use conventional coolant 50/50 mix with fleetguard DCA-65L additive. I try to keep the SCA's around 2.5 to 2.8 ppm. which is about 7oz. per gallon of coolant.

For what it's worth, always use an oil that is rated for diesel engines. It will contain additives to suspend the soot that will come by the rings on any diesel. Normal motor oil cannot suspend the soot inherent in a diesel crank case. The soot particles then have the opportunity to make contact with rods, bearings, etc. Not good. I live near Binghamton, NY and run Delo 400 15-40 in my Cummins/Dodge and the JD-430. They both started well at 10* today. The key to a good starting diesel is a properly rated battery in a state of good charge, extremely clean electrical connections and an absolutely air-tight fuel system. A little Power Service additive (in the white bottle) doesn't hurt either.

I also run Shell Rotella T 15w40 year round in my diesel pickups and the 330, no starting problems in either. Gregory is correct, a good battery, and good glow plugs and clean electrial connections are required for trouble free diesel use in the winter. I also use the Power Service Cetane booster/anti gell/injector cleaner in my fuel, a little extra cetane helps on those super cold day startups!! I have run all three major pickup diesels and used the same oil with excellent results.

I agree with the guys too a good name oil(Shell, Mobile,& etc.) 15w40 but I use JD coolant when I pulled the Rad out for service this past summer and because the 330 sit in a unheated shed I use the fuel out of my mobile homes oil tank cause it I get mix for heating the house (diesel/kero.)an old farm trick that I learned as a kid it didnt fail me last year but I think I need a set of Glow Plugs it is getting hard to start .

I agree with Gregory using oil rated for a diesel. The key is to read the bottle and make sure it is API certified for diesel engines which Mobil 1 is.I read some Texaco bottles I have in my garage and a cheap off name also and both say they meet API requirements for GASOLINE engines,no mention of diesel so I would not use that type of product in my Yanmar.

After reading your post and doing some thinking I went to wally world at lunch today and read the backs of some oil bottles.I found that the Mobil 1 says meets diesel requirements on the back. However some of the bottles of 10w30 said for gasoline engines on the front and some did not.Bottum line I believe in using the best available for my machines and the Rotella and other diesel engine oils control/suspend soot.It is time for an oil/filter change on my new 455 and changed my mind and will now do one on my old 455 as well.I bought Rotella 15w40 and will go with that.I am new to diesel's and thank you and everyone else for the valuable information.

You bet AJ! I'm glad some other fellas piped in and backed me up! A diesel is a completely different animal. The important thing is to understand why your making the choices you're making (in this case, which oil) rather than just doing what somebody said on a forum. Now that you have a mental picture of soot particles grinding away at your main bearings, you'll have just as good an explanation as anybody the next time the question comes up. Check out www.dieseltruckresource.com when you're surfing some day---great bunch of folks with some very impressive knowledge. There's a few folks putting over 1000 ft/lbs torque to the rear wheels and still pulling down over 20mpg with the 'ol cummins!

I bought some pensoil 15w-40. I need to make sure it is diesel certified. Since I have had a few days to use the 430 in the cold I notice it takes a long time to crank over. I got a lot of white smoke and then finally a good bunch of black. Could the long cranking be indicative of a failing battery or a problem?

Thanks!

Neil, my 455 was suddenly quite hard to start about 10 days ago - took 2 or 3 tries and put out a lot of black smoke when starting. Turned out 1 of the 3 glow plugs went bad. After replacing it I'm back to pretty much immediate starts.

Here is a link about the glo plugs in the late model tractor section. Should give you some ideas.

You might want to search on gloplugs or glo-plugs or glo plugs. Also throw in test or replace into the search phrase. I'd bet money there are lots of threads that have talked about this before.

I want to buy a 285 EFI from a local yard. Ths thing runs like a Mecedes. The seller is trying to talk me out of buying it because he says they made less than 2000 of them and parts are rare, unique and scarce. Are they that few? So far ive only gotten idea of how many 285 models they made. not specifically EFI.
