I just replaced all the hydraulic fluid in my 420 with fresh Hy-gard.
(Regular not low-vis at the insistence of my Dealer)

I had the level at the middle of the sight tube when cold but after mowing it was well above the sight tube

Does the fluid expand that much or do I need to drain some fluid?

John fluid could expand that much. Its like they never tell you to check the air in your tires when they are hot as the reading is wrong. More out of curiosity than it being a problem did the dealer explain why not to use low-vis. Roger

Thank you Roger

I thought it curious too, pretty much everything I read on here said use low-vis
He cited the summer temps here
However the temperatures here are pretty warm.
We very rarely get below freezing
A few times a winter is all
Summers are hot and mowing is hot

Average Temps for Cleveland/Bradley County TN:

Interesting, John. I'm north of you a little [Knox county] and have used nothing by low-vis in the 17 years we've lived here. So far no hydro problems. I'm not certain if the Deere dealer I frequent keeps the regular hy-gard in stock. I'll have to look the next time I go for parts.

John, I wouldn't worry about running regular Hy-Guard in your southern location. Also, if the level is in the sight glass with the tractor cold, you're OK.

Those Sundstrand/Sauer-Danfoss hydrostatics were used by several manufacturers (IH, New Holland, etc.) all whom "recommend" their single-weight hydraulic fluid. The Sauer-Danfoss site for the type 15 has a very long list, which adds up to "either a good standard hydraulic fluid or type F
ATF." Also, TM1591, for the Yanmar-powered tractors, is "either or" on low-vis or standard, with a lower minimum temperature for the low-vis.

I use the low-viscosity in my 318, because the tractor is used in Wyoming winter with a snow blower, and sub-zero overnight temperatures are normal for Dec-Jan. You don't have that in Tennessee.
