I searched the forum, having no luck.I will ask in a new post. I have a 318,and a 430. Both tractors will run away, then slow down! you have to constantly have your hand on the hydro lever. I replaced the damper on my 318. Still has the same problem. Is there another adjustment? all linkage is tight.thanks for the help!

Sodbuster,

First -- welcome to the WFM forums, the best place to learn about these fine vintage Deere machines!

Just a couple of questions so we are all understanding your symptoms: you are describing ground speed variation without any change in engine speed or movement of the hydro control lever in the dash slot -- correct? And by 'linkage is tight' do you mean that the lever has a good adjustment on the friction pad so it does not move by itself -- or have you disassembled all the hydro linkage joints to check for wear that cannot be seen in place when assembled?

I suspect you have wear in your linkage, if what you describe is a variation in ground speed when there is not change in the position of the hydro lever. Usually this is most noticeable when you go up a grade versus going down a grade.

Since it takes very little motion at the control input shaft of the hydrostatic transmission to make a very substantial change in ground speed, each little bit of wear in the linkage joints along the way all add up even when you can not "see" the wear/slop. There are lots of threads here about ground speed variation. Here are a few:

t hoobler,
I thought that my linkages for my 430 Hydro control were pretty tight. However, when I disassembled the linkages to check, all of the holes and adjusting cams were either rounded out or worn. Had to buy all new stuff.

Also, check your frame channel where the rear axles bolt up. My 430's frame was cracked there on both sides, and speed changes were constant due to the movement of the hydro in relation to the frame & controls. I didn't mind it though, as I bought it CHEAP due to the seller thinking it was a major hydro problem. Took 2 hours to repair.
