So what's the secret to removing and installing the orange hydrostatic transmission control knobs on a 300/314/317/318? I thought that years ago I had unscrewed one on a buddy's tractor. I recently tried removing a faded one with the idea that I will replace it with one that is not faded. I pretty much destroyed it getting it off. it did not unscrew. I had to use brute force and ignorance to get it off! Are these meant to be replaceable?

Did you remove the set screw from the side before unscrewing it?

Mine was just push in, it's a an older 318, around 1984.
I used a hammer and a piece of wood on the back.
It was easy, I had a lot of room because the console was unbolted and far away.

Mine has a metal clip on the inside that goes on a groove on the handel and just makes it's own groves into the knob. Brut force pulling straight out is the way to remove that style.
