Morning everyone. My first post after lurking for a while. I recently bought my first John Deere. A JD140-H1. Which is currently being disassembled for a frame up rejuvenation and fresh paint.

I'm trying to remove the brake/clutch pedal assembly, and I'm having one heck of a time getting the 1/4" x 1-1/4" groove pins (part #25H97) out. I sprayed them with penetrating oil good and let them sit, then tried driving them out with a punch. No such luck. I then used a torch and got them real warm thinking that may help. Still no such luck. I finally resorted in drilling one out. What's the correct method? Or am I on the right track?

Any ideas are appreciated.

I appreciate the assistance, Don.

Currently, the one I'm having troubles with is just inside on the motion lever right side, and the other which is farthest right on the brake shaft.
I thought a 5lb hammer would do the trick to drive them out. No sir!
From my researching, mine has the typical rust on the interior walls. The rust must be from battery gases is what I'm thinking, so there is some rust on the shaft and pin.
I had a feeling the pins were tapered. It's hard to really tell though.

Thanks again

Cliff, thanks for the useful info. It makes sense, but those pins (in my opinion) are overkill given the application.
I'll have a better look at them to see if I can tell narrow-from-wide ends.

Worse case scenario, I'll drill them as Matt mentions.

Thanks for the assist fellas!

I think the pins are just out of round from the factory. S they bite when installed, if the were truly tapered your drawing would have seperate dimensions for each end.
I just recently tore down a 140 and thow it was not real easy, I drove all the pins out.

Just. My $.02

From past postings on this subject, the general consensus seems to be that the pins are indeed tapered. I've only ever had to remove 1, and it was tapered.
It also seems that they are installed from the easy to get to side, so they have to be driven out from the hard to get to side. (Just to make life interesting)
