Hi All

This last weekend I got the new points installed in my vaters JD 140. And it is running very well. But I noted that the generator was not Charging. The DC voltage on the battery with the engine running was only 12,5V.

Then I had a look in the workshop manual. And messured the generator coil - and it was open curcuit (high ohms).

So I nned to change the coil. Is that a big job ? The flywheel needs to go of. Do I need to remove the engine from the tractor ?

Can I use a coil from a smaller model for example a 8 hp ?

The stator is behind the flywheel it puts out AC current. The Coil is mounted on the side of the tractor. 4" cylinder.

Check the AC Voltage coming out of each of the stator (3 phases) wires is how to proceed I believe.

You probably have a bad connection though. Check the DC wire coming off the Voltage Rectifier. It goes to charge the battery. I have seen this wire get cut putting the battery in or out or messing around near the console.

If I misunderstood the problem, ignore me like the wife does. :p

Hi

When I messure the AV volt from the stator the voltage is "zero". When I messure the resistence between the two wires of the Stator, I messure high resistence (open circuit). So I conclude the stator is broken ? And need a new stator ?}

Erik,

I do you have enough off your tractor to see the wires from where they go into the flywheel to the rectifier? I can't help but think that either a wire is broken or shorted downstream of the stator.

Someone with more experience can chime in on how often a stator will just go bad but I would try the easiest thing first.

I really meant to ask of it was charging before you installed the points last weekend? I mean did it up and stop charging once you put it back together or is it possible that it was never charging?
