Hello.

I hope that you all had a good newyear start.

I am considering to trade my late (1973/1974) JD140 H1 to get a good running JD 330 diesel.

What do you think about this ? I am thinking about the pro & con's. The JD 140 I can repair my self. How are the experience with the 330 ? Are they reliable running, when getting normal service ?

I like the clasical look of the JD 140, but also like the 330 because I when will not need to buy gasoline.

Best regards, from Denmark - Erik

Erik,

The biggest issues are that the 330 has only a single spool of hydraulics just like your 140 H1 so you are not gaining there, and that the rear attachments you may already have for your 140 will not directly fit the 330, which is open frame as contrasted to the 140 closed frame configuration.

Non-PTO driven front attachments will fit both tractors equally well (dirt/snow blade, de-thatcher, etc.)

Parts may be an issue outside the US, as the 330 was a single model year whereas the 140 was made for many years, and most likely in higher quantities each of those years...

The Yanmar diesel is very reliable if the oil is changed and the air filter kept clean -- dirt is the enemy of high compression engines like a diesel.

Most members here would add the 330 to their herd and keep the 140 if at all possible...your situation may be different.

We would all like to see any pictures of Deere models that have made it outside the US and are still being used, so please post some if you get the chance.

Actually a lot of the PTO powered front equipment will also work. I have a wood chipper and Pincor that fit either. Keep both. If you can't then it depends on what you use the 140 vs the 330 for. But since the 140 you have is and H1 and the 330 is and they are both manual steering-then I think the 330 would fit your needs. The 330 has very expensive engine parts if it does need work-but they last a LONG time.

Erik,

I just asked this question a couple months ago. I had an opportunity to trade my '72 140 H3 for a 330 and asked the guys here for opinions. I got a lot of great feedback, the thread is below.

http://www.wfmachines.com/discus/messages/17/300734.html?1415690290

Looking back, I'm glad I kept my 140. It is a beast and I found that once I added enough weight I had more than enough power to do what I've needed. I've been plowing snow with the 140 this winter and actually prefer it to blowing snow with my 318. I don't typically use it for more than an hour at a time so the small fuel tank doesn't bother me.

I won't say I'll never get rid of the 140, but I think I would probably sell my 318 first if I needed to get rid of one of my tractors.

Now if I was looking to go from an 140 H1 to a 330, that would probably be a different story.

Hi All

Thanks for the feedback.

I have made my mind up and keep the JD 140. The transfer cost to swicht to JD 330 was just to high - 2500-3000 USD.

Over the weekend I had the K321 apart to change the Stator, and now the engine is chargning the batteri ok (ca. 14,8 volt). I just like the solid way the JD 140 is built.

I have also encl. picture of the furture co-driver on the JD 140

Thanks - Erik

Erik,
Handsome little guy.
You might end up having to get another tractor in a couple years. I have a feeling the little guy will take over duties on the 140, so you will be left out in the cold.
Always loved the 140s, just have to find a reasonably priced one around here and convince the Mrs.
