Hello All

During the weekend I changed oil and filter on the transmission. And I filled ca. 5 liter of oil in the transmission. But now I can see it is 4-5 cm above the "safe area". Is that a problem will it damage the transmission ? The tractor is driving and working well with the high oil level.

The oil I remove was some red stuff, that was smeling very bad, with some thing like thin hair in the oil. I that a problem ?

Best regards, Erik (from Denmark)

never seen thin hair in oil before, maybe its just some crud left behind that settled on the bottom

hi ERIK, Sounds to me like that ''thin hair'' might be your old filter element breaking down. I would definitely use a different brand of filter!!
I also would change fluid and filter again after about 10 hrs. of use in order to get any fibers still left in system.
if you don't mind me asking; what brand of filter was it? and how long was it on there calender wise and hrs. of use? good luck, J.Z.M.

Thanks for the feed back. It was a original JD filter I removed, and I also installed a new JD filter. I just got the traktor some mounth ago so I have no change history.

Do you thing that it may be a problem that the current oil level is to high 3-5 cm ??

Best regards, Erik

you can always drain some out or maybe use a fitting on the hyd port in front if you have them to drain it.

I know that nut on bottom isn't fun to get off to remove some oil.

too high in a gear box isn't good as it can introduce air in which is not a lubricant

Yes, the 140s have the breather.

Erik, that might be too high for the fluid level. Could you take some back out through the fill? Maybe by using a tube with suction, perhaps by connecting it to what we call a "turkey baster"? Photo below:

Erik Larsen - I sure wouldn't overfill your trans as has been stated by others. You mentioned that you don't have any hydraulic ports on the front of your tractor? That seems to me (and others I'm very sure) to be extremely odd. 140 H1 tractors have 2 ports on the right and the 140 H3 has 4 ports two on each side. Odd your 140 has no ports on the front because as KnottyRope has mentioned that would be a good place to drain out some excess oil. Take another look on the front of your tractor to see if those hydraulic ports exist. Otherwise, if you've cycled the new oil through your new filter just pull the filter off and dump some of the oil out from there until you reach the correct level of oil.

<font size="-2"]Note to self: That just doesn't seem correct that that 140 doesn't have hydraulic ports up front.[/COLOR]

I have over filled mine too and I ran it for a little while and kept moving the hydraulic levers for a while and it all settled pretty good for me. Also try checking the lever while it's running at an idle if you haven't done that. If not I have sucked some how myself too through the dip stick tube. Like the others say. You should have ports/lines running to the front. Take a picture of your 140 and post it.

Hi Everyone,
Kenneth & Kalin,

I also have a 140H-1 with no front hydraulic ports.
I will have to go out in the toy box to look at the serial number, but I think it is a 1973 model.
All the rest of my 140's have the ports!!

take care Tom B.

Hi Everyone,

Erik L,

Did you get your hydraulic oil at the right level.

I checked my serial number on my 140 with no front ports, and it is an early 1974 model. Serial # T0583-058724M
It also does not have the cut out in the fender pan for the top link of a 3pt hitch.

I do not use that one for anything but pulling a trailer around.

Take care Tom B.
