I am rebuilding a 1989 P218 onan. Has anyone used Gary's place .010 pistons? Also, what about the gaskets he sells? This is my first of many posts. Does anyone have any leads to a good set of factory onan oversized pistons?

Whatever it takes...do replace the cam bearings ! Many times over-looked and then many swear words a spoken ! Good that you thought to do that. Yes, there is a special tool of course to do that.
Ask around, maybe there's a small engine shop that will pop the old ones out and the new ones in for a small fee.
Welcome aboard...you are in the right place !

Has anyone heard about drilling (new hole or enlarging one) on onan engines to help with breather blow by (aka oil in air cleaner body)???

I'm asking because an authorized onan parts dealer/distributor mentioned to me because I'm looking to repair my onan for the same reason.

Thanks to this forum, I've repaired electrical and spindle problems by following this forum.

Russell : If your Engine is in good shape, there should be virtually NO blow-by …… the hole you speak of is for venting the Crank-case Only ….NOT for a control of blow-by, which if is excessive only happens if piston compression is leaking past the Rings or bad Valve Guides …… GK

Gary : So is it just to make sure the holes in the valve area clear and cleaned out when doing rings and valves on a refresh of the engine?

1987 318 with onan p218g with 2300 hours on it, original owner, used for mowing, snow throwing ( 2 stage 47") and tilling (rear PTO 48" 3pt hitch tiller).

Asking because I'm preparing to redo my onan over a two week period in the coming weeks.

Thank you for any info you can provide.

Russ,
An Onan '87 P218G, 2300 hrs., used for mowing, snow throwing using a heavy 47 thrower, & tilling with a heavy 48 = that engine has done way more than OK many will think.
With all due respect, am hoping you let everyone know how you end up. It'll be appreciated. Bobo

Bobo & All,

Currently replacing a lot of items due to age and bearing failures (no grease zerks).

Front PTO coil (wiring age, cracked broken insulation next to coil)
Front PTO bearing

Mule drive pulley bearings (both)

46" mower spindle bearings all 6 in the 3 spindles
right side blade spindle bearing housing - wobbled out shape (whole bears and shaft moving)

The hours maybe more because the original hour meter failed at 1075 hours and I did not catch it for a long time, new meter has just over 400 hours in three years, did not keep a log ( now I do on the computer - spreadsheet, faster to look up then going though years paper work ) even for the vehicles now so I can see if maintenance is needed (mileage drop off or how far on a set tires went etc)

I do rotate through six pre-filters on the air filter due what it sucks up from below every time I do anything during the spring, summer, and fall ( you would think that JD would have designed to have air sucked in from top of machines after owners experiences ) freshly cleaned ( vacuum the dirt, dog wood seeds, dandelion seeds, etc off, then washed with dawn dish soap, air dried, ready for a quick oil and placement before going out for a day or weekends use.
