I have a 1983 JD 318 that has a power steering cylinder with a small drip leak. Nothing bad, but get kind of messy. I'm going to try to take it to a local hydraulic repair shop to get it fixed, but if that doesn't work, does anyone know of a shop that does this type of repair. I was thinking that I had seen a post about a shop in Knoxville, TN that could repair the JD cylinders. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

I had a shop rebuild mine. It was a favor, but any decent hydraulic shop should be able to do it. Basically, the endcap is cut off on a lathe and then all the seals are replaced. Then the unit is welded back together.

Hello Chad
I would be Interested to hear if a Hydraulic shop was able to repair your steering cylinder. Mine is currently seeping some but it not leaking badly it has been replaced at one time or another as it does not the the grease Zerk fitting on the steering Knuckle portion of the front tie rod end. Regards, Kurt

Kurt, I will let you know as soon as they are finished with it. They told me while I was at the shop they could repair it. It's a little pricey, but still cheaper than buying a new one. I'll give you all the details when I get it back.

Update on the steering cylinder repair on my 318. I have the repaired cylinder in hand and ready to be re-installed. $71 for the repair. Looks good as new, hopefully works that way too! Harrah's Hydraulics in Madisonville, KY. They repair all types of hydraulic cylinders. They have a website.

I think the trick here is to find a machine shop not a hydraulic shop. I had 2 different ones leaking at once and my local machine shop cut them apart let me put $2 worth of new seals in and then welded them back together for $75.

But this is like always just my 2 cents...
