Hello folks. My new to me JD 420 has a 540 rear pto but it has the female end. I would like to use my fathers Kubota tiller at some time but would need a male end coming out of the JD. I'm not yet familiar enough with this unit to determine what it is I need to make this happen. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Quote "I might be wrong. Im guessing that my rear pto is a 540. Does this sound correct? Mine has a female. Thanks guys."

It would be rare. Measure the opening size and count the splines.

If it is one inch opening and 15 splines.

If it is 1 3/8 and six spline its 540.

If it is 1 3/8 and 21 splines its 1000.

If it is 1 3/4 and 21 splines its 1000 an is on a big horsepower tractor.

These above are standards in the industry.

I think and have no proof of this but they probably put the 2000 pto's on garden tractors to prevent us from hooking to 540 equipment and tearing our tractors up because they are not designed for that equipment.

Don't be confused about the North American series and the metric series of which there are several kinds. The above site gave me a lot of information.
