Hello All

Is it possible to change the stator in a late JD140, with the engine still mounted in the chassis ? Or is it the bedst to take out the engine ?

Is it correct that stator from a 8Hp to 14Hp Kohler engine will fit ?

Best regards, Erik

JDPARTS.COM shows the stator the same on an early 140. NOT the late 140.
Are you sure the stator is bad? Did you check for A.C. voltage off the stator leads?
I really don't remember replacing a stator in all my years of repairing these mowers.
If you need to replace it...Pull the engine. It isn't too difficult.

Hello Jim

Thanks for the feedback. When I try to measure the resistance between the 2 wires from the stator I messure high resistance (open circuit). With the engine running I try to measure the AC voltage, but there is not a stable readout, the figures just changes very fast on the digital display.

That is the reason why I think the stator is broken. There is also melted a hole in the regulator blok. (se picture)

The AC would be wildly fluctuating voltage. The regulator takes the unregulated AC and converts it to regulated DC. Thats the problem with digital meters, they have problems trying to display fluctuating voltages. Did you measure the AC wires with them removed from the regulator? If so, that means something is coming out of the stator.
That regulator looks a bit iffy to me. Perhaps you should go ahead and replace it, then see what is going on with the stator.

if the stator is open when checking with ohms then it is bad

You would need to pull the engine. Blower housing would hit the frame.

140 isnt bad to pull the engine. In 2 hours tops you could have it sitting on a workbench.
