Alan,

I'm not familiar with the 318 but if it has a pipe plug I would suggest pulling it out and try some plumbers teflon tape or use some plumbers paste to seal the threads. If that doesn't work then you should be able to drill and tap the pan with a larger pipe thread.

Thanks Bob,
I'll have to look into what the next size up drain plug JD have. I wasn't to sure about drill and tap the pan with a larger pipe thread because the pan is cast aluminum. Also it isn't that easy to get at to drill it through the frame to drain plug hole.

Alan, you should have a valve, not just a drain plug...
It should be attached to a hose, and you should have access through a large hole in the side of the frame...

This could be a problem that might require for the engine to be removed from the mounts, remove the pan to repair the treads on the pan itself, I inserted a pipe reducer with sealant in the pan with a nut on the inside of the pan to make sure this plug does not spin, then install either a plug or, buy a brass drain valve from John Deere which, opens to drain the oil in the future, this plug would take the wear rather then the treads of the pan.
I would like to keep the rework of the pan treads to a minimum because of contamination to the oil system.
There are tapered drain plug available to perhaps fix your drain problem on a temporary fix until you can take the tractor out of service to repair it the right way.
