John Deere 140 Heavy Duty Air Cleaner

Hi guys,

After having the 140 HD air cleaner sit on the shelf for a couple months I have finally decided to mount it. During installation I ran into a few problems. First is the hose. We have a NAPA 7405 hose and there seems to be a big kink in it. The second problem is when the adapter is on the carb to fit the hose we are unable to move our choke up and down. Any answers are greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Well I found Robb Krugers information on the hose in the Tech section and we have found that the adapter to the carb for the hose is home made and is too wide. We are going to bring it to the machine shop and get it lathed down.

Scott, I recall that if the screws used to hold on the adapter, or the regular air cleaner for that matter are too long, they may bind the choke or throttle shaft. I don't recall which exactly.
Robb,

We got it lathed down today and it works great now! I'll post some pictures tonight.

Here are some photos of the HD Air Cleaner on the 140.

We got this piece lathed down so the choke would bypass it.

Scott with all the nice green grass around there do you really need a heavy duty air cleaner, or do you plow with that tractor?
Did you add the hole in the hood or was that a previous owner mod.

I have seen more than one where someone put a hole over the gastank so they could fill it without flipping the hood open!
Mike,

We did not add the hole in the hood. The previous owner(a John Deere Mechanic) told Joe Loch(who we bought it from)that he put the hole in the hood due to the earlier models over heating. Other than that hole there is not a single stress crack in the hood.

PS: Don't tell anyone but this is our secret at shows

That's a great way to keep your cup of coffee warm during the winter!
Hello any place where the heavy duty air cleaner filter can be purchased I have that filter on my 1970 j/d 140 but haven't been able to locate a replacement air filter for it.....thanks for the help....Steve from Florida
am100137, its still available from Deere, 12.80 at my dealer.

Its the same filter as all 317 and 400 tractors, and is not listed under 110/112/120/140, its in a seperate accessory catalog, pc1149
thank you very much I will try that......again thanks for the help and quick response.....
I have drooled over those air cleaners for years. Sure wish I could find one, or one that is nearly identical

The John Deere number should be AM100137. They should still be available. The 317's use the same filter.
I've seen someone that built one of these out of a 317 canister for a 140. In just wondering how similar they are in reality?

The 317 filter housing is only slightly different.

The spot where the wing nut goes on a 317 is tapered down, a 100 series is tapered up.

I think there is a golf cart filter housing that looks like the 140 ones.
