Oh, Phil, anxious to see it, I'm working on a 316 now. Well not right now, its been 4 to 7 deg here at night and my shop under the stars it a little cold. Hoping for warmer weather and getting it inside. I have sanded and painted the sheet and metal and right proud of it. It did not have any bends in it, other than the very front end where it needed a "bumper" to keep from hitting something. Have to buy a few parts at a time, or I won't have money for LP gas..

Phil,
Good job on getting the pictures to load. One thing though is to be sure you hit your "Enter" key on the keyboard before and after each picture to get them to stack vertically. If you don't they will stack horizontally forcing the whole thread to be wide, which means we have to scroll left and right to read each post in it's entirety. I edited the pictures to place an "Enter" after each one (I like to hit the "Enter" key a couple of times to place a nice space between the pictures).

My wife helped me. Well, I hope you enjoy the pics of the 316. History of the tractor goes like this: I ordered the tractor in October of 1977 and took delivery March of 1978. I ordered it with a 3pt hitch, 46" deck, 54" blade, 3pt Plow and Disc, rototiller, tire chains, and loaded tires. Used the tractor up until 2003 it had 1200 hours on it and was pretty roughed up. So, in April 2012 I decided to restore it. I finished it in 2013 end of September. The engine was completely gone thru, new crank, new cam, new rod, piston, new everything, I painted the inside of the engine block with Red Oxide Armature Epoxy paint and black gloss engine epoxy paint, the driveline Hydro has everything new or rebuilt in it. The entire tractor is either Powder coated or epoxy painted, the grill and gas tank are brand new, I converted the engine from a mechanical to electric fuel pump, also a brandnew Kohler 30mm carb, all the hydraulics are brand new. The correct seat is being made by Hapco, the seat paint is blasted and powder coated and waiting. Thanks for looking.

Darrin, the new bigger tires are on my JD400 that I posted on here. And yes the 316 sits in a climate controlled shop with a wool blanket on it, and so do my other JD Hydros (314,318,another 400,and my 214).All of them have been restored also.

Hello Phil
Outstanding job of your Restoration I applaud your effort's & Expertise. I just Picked up a John Deere 316. Mine is a Turd as it spent most of it's Life on the Ocean shore's of Florida and with the flaking factory Power coat paint & salt air rust has Taken over well on it. I bought it for a Project to get my Son in law into his first John Deere mine has the later Placed Onan P-218 twin cylinder engine in it. I notice some major differences in the Two 316's here being mine and yours. Mine is an Open frame Tractor with a floor pan that match's the John Deere 318. Mine is also an H-1 Hydro lever Tractor not an H-2 Like yours. Mine also only has one brake pedal unlike your's that has dual brakes. My Hydro disconnect is up under the right side of the rear fender pan above the right rear wheel where as your's seems to be right in the fender pan in front of the seat. I guess John Deere changed a few thing's on these 316's during their production run. Mine is so rough that my plan's are to get the Onan P-218 running as it is not at this Point. If it turn's out to be a Good engine I will pull it and Transform it into a Nicer Model 317 that I have a Line on that is an H-2 Tractor with the factory Optional hydraulic flow diverter valve on it. Very Nice job you should be proud of your Tractor it look's better than the day you bought it.I wont soil your Thread with my Ugly Mis-treated 316 which is a Real Eye sore compared to Your beauty but if you would like to see it, here is a link to the forum thread that it is in currently. Regards, Kurt

Phil, Not long ago my 300 was little more than a rolling frame and several totes of bits and parts. It had need taken on trade. The original owner tried to see how long it would run without oil. That was a real shame because it had always been dealer serviced and cleaned. The hydro was more dusty than anything. I had a crank, got a slightly used Kohler piston and rod and new Kohler rings. Then I dug into the parts pile. It now has a Magnum M-16 front end and magneto ignition. The oversize blower housing is still giving me fits but can be fixed. Then I'll take everything off the frame and paint it. The tractor was so well cared for, a quick power wash should do it. The only real damage was done after it blew up and was disassembled.
I still can't get over the guts a K341 has. There has to be more than a 2hp increase over my K321's.
